  1. I do think that Columbus wasn't that good of a man butt, if it wasn't for him we probably wouldn't have been here. I blame Columbus's men because they did all of the dirty work, Columbus just told them to do it. The men didn't have to murder hundreds and hundreds of Taino Indians. So I think that Columbus deserves a holiday after him.

    2. I agree with you that it was all of Columbus' men who did all the dirty work but it was really Columbus who made them do it. No i don't believe he should have his own holiday because he was not a very nice guy and even though he did not personally kill the Tainos, he still planned it. So no Columbus should not have his own holiday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    3. I agree with that thought i belive that clumbas is the one to blame. If it wasn't for him telling his men to do what they did this would have never happend in the first place.

  2. I think that Columbus is a villain. For example, he killed millions of Indians because they didn't give gold because they didn't have any. Then, if Columbus didn't exist, then we all people wouldn't know if the world was flat or round like a circle. Finally, Columbus was the only person that believed and kinda discovered that the world was round. So i think that Columbus deserves a holiday for him and his discovery. Richard C 9/27/12

  3. I think that Columbus is a villian because he told all of his men to go kill innocent people. He cut off peoples hands, cut out their eyes etc. Even though he did discover america I still think that it wasn't right for him do to those things. I do not think that he should have his own holiday but therefore should be remembered for the good things that he accompished in his lifetime.

  4. I think Columbus was a villian. He released visious dogs who attacked the Native Americans. If columbus didnt like how or what the Native Americans did then he would order his men to cut off there hands and noses. Even though i think he is a villian, he discovered where we live today. I think he does need to be recognized for finding America, but he ordered his men to attack innocent Native Americans.

  5. I think that is a villain. He killed 5,000,000 Native Americans. We also would have never known that the world was round. We would have never been her because they never knew North America was here.

  6. Christopher Columbus was a horrible person and i don't think Columbus day should be celebrated because Christopher Columbus had his men hurt and or kill Indians within twenty years of them being there all five million North Americans were killed

  7. Christopher Columbus is a villain to me. For killing the Taino Indians he shouldn't have a holiday dedicated to himself. Also he made the Indians his slaves. He tortured them by cutting off their noses and hands. Finally, you can't kill a whole nation for their gold. Hopefully that will never happen again.

  8. I don't think that Christopher Columbus was a hero and I don't think he deserves a holiday. First of all, he discovered the Americas but instead of coming peacefully, he took the native americans back to Spain to become slaves. Also, he ordered his men to cut off the hands, ears and noses of the native americans that didn't bring enough gold. Finally, he let his men let dogs out on infants so they could be ripped apart. Even though he discovered the americas doesn't mean he should deserve a holiday especially since he only did one really good deed and a ton of bad ones.

  9. Although Christopher Columbus discovered North America, I believe he was a villain and shouldn't have a holiday. For example, Christopher Columbus and his men killed over five million Indians. They wiped out the entire population of Native Americans on an island. In addition, if they didn't do exactly what he said he punished them. Depending on the crime, the Indians could lose their nose, ears, or hands. Finally, Christopher Columbus and his men sent a large amount of Indians back to Europe to be used as slaves. I wonder why Christopher Columbus did what he did.

  10. I think that Christopher Columbus is more like a villian and does not deserve his own holiday. He Killed over 3,000,000 Native Americans and took all their land. He also would cut off peoples hands noses and ears if they could not give him gold in time. Columbus also brought back Native Americans as slaves and tortured them. Finally he would set wild dogs on infants and women and would let them tear the people apart. Christopher Columbus definetly does not deserve his own holiday.

  11. I think Columbus was a villain. He had tortured and killed the Indians if they didn't bring him gold. For example he would cut off their hands. Also some of the Indians committed suicide because of Columbus, and they would murder their own children so that their kids didn't have to deal with Columbus. And he had sent dogs to attack little kids. Eventually he wiped out the entire Indian population in the land that he "found". Therefore i think Columbus does not deserve his own holiday.

  12. After learning about Christopher Columbus, I think that he was more of a villain than a historical hero. The reason Columbus is considered a historical hero is because he discovered North America, but the vikings discovered North America hundreds of years before him. But, they didn't explore around and didn't stay long enough to realize their discovery. Also, Columbus wiped out a whole population of Taino Indians. Even though the Tainos were kind to him, gave him gifts, and allowed him to stay on there land Columbus still killed and tortured them. If the Tainos didn't give him gold on time he'd punish them by cutting off there hands, nose,or ears. Plus, he set wild dogs off on women and infants. He even brought some of the Indians back to be slaves. Columbus does not deserve a holiday. I wonder what other things there are undiscovered about Christopher Columbus.

  13. I believe that Christopher Columbus is a hero because he is the reason why i exist. The men did all of the killing and Columbus's men were really the king and queen of Spain's men. The king and queen of Spain held the Spanish inquisition so i am not surprised that the men they gave Columbus were not good people tricked by king and queen of Spain. they were probably ordered to do this to the Natives that lived on the islands that they landed on if they didn't follow Columbus's orders. Therefore, I think Christopher Columbus was a hero and not a villain.

  14. I think that Columbus was neither a villain or hero. I think this because he he did not find North America which makes him unimportant to us because he only found Cuba and some Bahamanian islands. He did not personally kill the the Indians the kings men killed them. I believe that he does not deserve a holiday but he is not a villain. Joosep R 3-4A

  16. I believe that Columbus was a hero. He started the colonization of the United states. If he did not start it we would not be living. He had the people from his land come here so they can start a new civilization. Besides his men killed the slaves not him. Columbus was just listening to the king and queen. Do you think he is a villain or a hero?

The indians even commited sucicide and killed their own children so that they didnt suffer the horrible toture. He even sent out dogs to attack the indians. 20. I believe that Christopher Columbus was a villan. He tortured and killed the indians one by one. He had no right to do any of these terrible things. Just because the indiands didnt exactly do what he told, he didnt have to cut off hands and ears. He even sent out dogs to attack everyone. The indians suffered alot. And because of that, they decided to murder their own children and babies so they didnt have to suffer what they suffered. HE is a terrible man, and a villan in my mind.

  21. I believe that Christopher Columbus was a villain but it wasn't all his fault. In the Spain the King and Queen had people killed daily. Coming from a place were killing was normal thing to do. So by him finding these people on the island he used them by killing to make them fear him. In this time killing would get you sentenced to life. I belive that Christopher coloumbus was guilt, but wasn't all his fault.

  22. After learning about Christopher Coloumbus I could say that in my opinion he was a villain. I think that Christopher Columbus should be considered a villain, and he should not receive his own holiday because he orderd his men to kill or cut off the Tainos hands or noses after not finding gold for him. Christopher Columbus also was not really looking for America, he was just trying to find the gold and spice islands of Asia, to get gold for himself. So in the end I think Columbus was a bad man who did not care about finding America, but finding gold for himself.

  23. I believe that Christopher Columbus was a hero. He founded the country that we live in today. Even though he did do some evil things, it was not all his fault. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella had a lot to do with what Columbus did. During his time, the spanish inquisition was going on. This involved killing people because of their religion. As a result, this influenced Columbus to use the people as slaves, and kill them if they did not obey him. Although Christopher Columbus did some awful things, he discovered our land. Without his determination and courage, we may not live in our home we call America, today.

  24. I belive Christopher Columbus was a villan. First of all he forced his men to keep sailing when they men didn't even want to. Then we he got to North America he acted nice and only took a few "Indians" back. Then we he came back he forced the boys and men to collect gold by a certain time and if they didn't there would be consquences. When him and his men were returning they brought some Taino Indians to work as slaves. Even though they were very nice , Columbus was cold hearted and didn't care much about them and treated them like rats , the only thing he really cared about was money, money and money. He would continue this act intill there was no more Taino people thus causing genocide to these people.

  27. I believe that Columbus is a villain but he still probably deserves a Holiday. This is because he was the person who had found what we call North America today (even though he thought it was India)! Although he is indeed a villain for harassing the poor Native Americans by cutting off their hands, nose or ear! Therefore, I think that Columbus is a villain but the only reason why he shouldn't be punished is because he was the reason people live in the US today.

  30. I believe Christopher Columbus is both. I think he is a hero, because he found America! But he also killed many. Also think this, Back then, if you killed someone and they weren't your kind, then you weren't charged with murder. So back then, he was a hero, because he found new land for Spain. So I believe we shouldn't celebrate Columbus day, but I think it should still be on the calendar.

  39. When it comes to a discussion of Christopher Columbus, I will surely want to change the subject. Christopher Columbus, in my opinion, was a BAD, BAD man. Why, you ask? Listen closely; I NEVER LIKE TO REPEAT HIS NAME! One reason why I completely detest Columbus is that he gave the awful orders for his men. Yes they could have said no, but the orders were still so morbid and beyond unspeakable. In addition, a second reason why I hate Columbus is that he wouldn't let his men leave. They asked with no threat and Columbus said NO. If he had let them leave none of the Indians would have died so awfully. I ponder about how some of you still like him (besides the fact that he is one of the reasons for us living in North America.)
