Early English Colonies

If you had to have lived in one of the early English settlements, which one would you pick; Roanoke, Jamestown, Plymouth, or Massachusetts Bay?  Give at least three reasons from the text, articles, etc. to support your answer!  (Post using first name, last initial, and period ONLY!!)

  1. If I could live in one of the early English settlements, it would be Plymouth. Simply because they had a three day feast, which we call Thanksgiving. Also, out of all of the English settlements, this one had the best landing because only one person was lost, and few if not no one got scurvy. Also, there were no Puritans to ruin everything.

  3. If I had to choose to live in one out of these towns, I would pick Jamestown. The reason why I would pick Jamestown is because Jamestown is where all the goods are. Jamestown had tobacco and gold. With all those riches you make off of the tobacco and gold you can get whatever you want. I wouldn't go to Roanoke because of the Indians. I wouldn't go to Plymouth because of the way they treated women. That's why I would live in Jamestown.

  4. If I had the choice to live in one of these towns, I would choose to live in Plymouth. I would choose Plymouth because that is where the first Thanksgiving was which would be cool to go to. They also had respect for the natives so the natives wont harm the settlers. It could be easy living there. Last, Jamestown started out as a bad decision, moving there in the wrong time and starving. Roanoke disappeared. So Plymouth seemed right

  5. If I had to choose to live in any early English Settlements I would choose to live in Plymouth and be a Pilgrim. I choose to live here because in Jamestown there was a terrible starving time and if I lived there I would probably die. Also, in Roanoke the people disappeared and/or died! In Massachusetts Bay the religious rules are too strict and woman were treated very badly, if they nagged then they got put on the ducking stool! Furthermore, Plymouth had the first Thanksgiving and it lasted 3 days! Who wouldn't want that?!?!? In conclusion I would want to live in Plymouth.

  6. I would want to live in Jamestown because i would want to know if they really were cannibals to survive. Also, how John Rolfe discovered tobacco. and how it turned into such a big sensation that its even here today. I would want to even see Pocahantas and see who she really is instead of the cartoo.

  7. I would want to live in Plymouth because they have a good education and they have good rules. Plymouth also, had the first Thanks giving that lasted 3 days. Every other settlement died or starved to death so I feel that Plymouth is a smart living area. That's why I think Plymouth is a smart and well thought out settlement.

  9. I would want to live in Jamestown. For example, they were very rich because they had a lot of tobacco products. Also, John Smith said no work no food. After that, The colony of Virginia was named after Virginia dare. Finally, the Spanish attacks up the coast and 650 men died of starvation, Disease, Indian attack in the First winter at the new colony.

  11. If I had to live in one of the English colonies I would pick to live in Plymouth. Would pick to live in Plymouth because the had one of the best set up settlements and they had a very good relationship with the Indians. Another reason why I would pick to live in Plymouth is because the set of a very good way to govern. Finally I would pick to live in Plymouth because they were all very hard workers.

  12. If I could live in one of the early English settlements, it would be in Jamestown. Jamestown had a rule made by John Smith saying, "No work, no food." During the "starving time" most of the settlers died.

  13. If I had to live in one of the colonies listed above, I would choose Plymouth. Firstly. Roanoke disappeared, and Jamestown's early population starved, so those two were automatically out. Next, Puritans treated woman harshly and were extremely strict about everything- I would last less than a day before being put in the ducking stool! Finally, Plymouth was very smart and kind, and they celebrated the First Thanksgiving and were friends with the Indians, so they had an easy time.

  14. If I had to choose to live in one of the early English settlements I would choose to live at Plymouth. I would choose this settlement over the others because this place seemed like the best. In articles that I've read it says that Roanoke colonists disappeared, Jamestown colonists went through a terrible starving time, and in Massachusetts Bay you had to listen to the Puritans or you would be punished. Also, I would want to live here because they made peace with the Indians instead of fighting. This would be helpful because they could show you tips on how to grow crops and live in the new land. Finally, I would like to live in the English settlement Plymouth because they celebrated the first Thanksgiving which was a three day feast that the Indians and pilgrims ate together. For many people, this was probably an ideal settlement for them.

  15. If I had to choose one of the 4 colonies I would choose Plymouth. I would choose plymouth because they have a good relation ship with the natives. I would not have to worry about being near them of be afraid of them. Plymouth also had a treaty of peace. That granted a peaceful life. They also brought women and children to Plymouth, witch was a good decision unlike Jamestown, where more that half that came were just men.

  16. If I had to pick which colony i would live in, I would most likely pick Roanoke. The reason for this is because i would have a lot more food. Also, even though Roanoke disappeared, at least they had women, so they could expand to their colony.

  17. If I had to pick I would choose Roanoke. The reason why is because, although it disapeared, I would of liked to know what happened and possibly hide so I could go back and report to the Queen. It's no doubt risky but I like adventure.

  18. If i lived in an english settlement it would have to be Roanoke so i could figure out what actually happened to them. It wouldnt matter to me if it was one of the tragic deaths because if i was really going death would have to be a risk i was willing to take.

  19. If I had to have lived in one of the English settlements I would pick Massachusetts Bay Colony. Because if I were to be accused of being a witch, I could stand up for myself. And, I would say "I do not work for the devil." which means I stood up for God. If they kill me because I did not tell the truth, at least I died as a Martyr, not a liar.

  20. If i had a place to live i would go to plymouth. I would go there because the natives were really helpful. They would teach me a way of life and i would probably fit best there.

  21. If I were to chose a colony to move to I would chose Jamestown.I would chose Jamestown because there was religious freedom. Also there was a lot of tobacco to grow. John Smith also said "no work, no food."So every had to help out. Also the people of Roanoke disappeared. Therefore, I would want to live in Jamestown more than other colonies.

  22. If I had to pick a colony to live in I would chose Plymouth. I would chose Plymouth colony because I would not have to follow just one region. I wouldn't get punished if I din't follow the same region as every else in the colony like the Puritans did. Another reason I would pick Plymouth is the settlers were friendly with the boogieing Indians. One of the Indians that was in the tribe was Squanto. Squanto could speak English and show the settlers how to plant crops and hunt and fish. The last reason I would pick Plymouth over the other colonies is because the first Thanksgiving was held in Plymouth. I would be able to see what the first Thanksgiving was like. What the settlers and Indians did if they were not eating during the three day feast. That is why i would choose to live in Plymouth above the other colonies.

  23. The colony that I would choose to live in is the colony of Massachusetts Bay.Why,because we were able to practice our religion even more in peace. Also, kids like us in the 1760s,were allowed to one of the best schools in the New World(America),Harvard. We were able to read a book called "The School of Good Manners." Finally,we followed the rules and laws of the Bible. These are some reasons why I would live in the colony of Massachusetts Bay.

  24. If I could’ve lived in any of the early English settlements, I would chose Plymouth. One reason I would chose Plymouth is because I wouldn’t have to worry about Indian attacks, as the PIlgrims made a peace treaty with the nearby Indians, Another reason why I would choose Plymouth is because they ran their colony very well, while other colonies, like Jamestown, didn’t.
The last reason why I would chose to live in Plymouth is because the first Thanksgiving took place there. I think that it would be really interesting to experience the first Thanksgiving and see what it was like. Although it would be really intriguing to live in any of the early English settlements, I would enjoy to live in Plymouth most.

  25. If i had to pick a colony to live in i would choose Plymouth. I would go there because it was peaceful there and the Natives had a good relationship with the Natives. Also, i would get to go to the first Thanksgiving and see what it was like. There was no fighting at Plymouth so it would be a nice place for anybody to live there. Another reason why i would like to live there is because they know how to grow and plant food in the ground.

  26. If I had to choose one of these colony's to live in I would choose Roanoke. The reason I would choose this colony is because people don't know what happened to it. This means that the people who lived there could have just left and not been killed. I would also like to live their to find out what exactly happened to the colony and not just make theories about it. My final reason for wanting to live in Roanoke is that the first child born in the colony's grew up in Roanoke and I think it would be cool to grow up knowing her as a neighbor or a friend.

  27. If I had to live in one of the early English settlements, I would like to live in Massachusetts Bay. Even though the colony had its rough spots (just like every other colony), it did pretty well compared to some of the others. One reason that I’d like to live in the Massachusetts Bay colony is that they invented public schooling. Without the knowledge of these smart Puritan people, I might not be posting on this blog, and there might not even be anything close to public schooling! Also, the Massachusetts Bay colony allowed people to vote. This is also a factor in our lives. Without the work of the Puritans, we might not be voting for our government leaders, and maybe we would have a monarchy or some other type of government. Finally, the Massachusetts Bay colony had a peaceful relationship with the natives around them. The natives could’ve showed the English Puritans new crops, which could’ve been an impact on what we eat today! Overall, I think the Massachusetts Bay colony was a strong and stable place to live and have a peaceful lifestyle.

  29. I would choose Roanoke. Since no one knows what happened I would be able to know the true mystery since I lived it. Also, I would be able to write in a journal and leave all the information. And finally, I would be ab;e to know the child born in Roanoke and I would be friends with her.

  30. If I had to choose to live in any of the early settlements I would probably choose to live in Plymouth. I would choose this because the Massachusetts Bay colony was too strict and treated women badly. The Roanoke colony had all there settlers disappear or die. Also the Jamestown colony underwent the "starving time" so i probably would have died.

  31. I would move to the Jamestown settlement because they were very successful. They also made peace with the Natives unlike some other colonies. A lot of people would have died if they did not grow tobacco.

  33. If I could pick a colony to live in back in colonial times i would chose Jamestown. I chose them for many reasons mainly the riches in tobacco and they had gold. But, I would wand to live later because I wouldn't want to live in the starving times. One downside would be the Indians because they only liked John Smith and once he left we were no longer friendly with the Indians.

  34. If I could pick one of the listed colonies to live in I would pick Plymouth. The reasons for picking this colony is that first, they are friendly with the natives. Secondly, we had a decent food supply due to trading with the natives and using the native's tactics to hunt food. That is why I would live in this colony.
