7th Grade-Queen Elizabeth

Read the article on page 13 in your packet entitled, "Sickness & Health." Which "beauty regimen" used by women in the 16th and 17th centuries do you think was the most shocking?  Why?  Can you think of modern examples of both women and men going too far for the sake of their appearance?  (Don't forget to post as ANONYMOUS using first name, last initial and class period. 1. I think the most shocking beauty treatment in the 16th and 17th centuries was washing there face with mercury. I mean come on WHO WOULD DO THAT apparently these women did. Because they were so concerned with there looks they didn't think for one second "if I do this could I die?" Well turns out most of them did because she just wanted to impress the boy across the street. Well I guess its true what they say beauty can kill you in many different ways.

    1. Wow! It is true that is pretty shocking I mean Mercury is supposed to burn when it sits on your skin. So why do that keep on doing it if it hurts? It makes no sense! Just no logical thought in it at all. It's actually makes me slightly mad at them for being so..... ignorant.

    2. To me, the white lead face paint was the most shocking "beauty regimen" in the 16th and 17th century. That is, because women actually painted dangerous chemicals on their faces! The chemical can cause many skin problems, also. Today, women use face treatments, which is not very good for them. But, the worst part of all, was that this face paint could poison these women. If you really think about it, this chemical could actually change much of history. For instance, if the chemical killed Queen Elizabeth, most history would not be around!

  2. I think the most shocking "beauty regimen" was how they put drops of belladonna, a poisonous shrub, in their eyes to make them sparkle. This was shocking to me because I am sure it must have hurt at least a little bit when the poisonous shrub went into their eyes. Especially why would they keep doing it if it hurt? All of it just makes no sense. There is literally no sense in logic anywhere in it.

Like putting toxins on there faces and lips.It wasn't just irritating and uncomfortable it was bad.It later on leaded to diseases.Today its not so different. Girls will do fake tans which leads to skin cancer. Also will get surgery's to alter there bodies. You were born to be a certain way and look a certain way. 5. I think the most shocking thing that people did for their appearance was to put white skin stuff on your face. They probably knew that the stuff they were using was poisonous. This shocked me because I would never ever do anything like that to my face. However some people might now a days. In this day I think women and men or women go too far to impress people. For example, men spend so much money on a guy to permanently poke ink into your body. Everyone says it hurts so bad. Why would you ruin your skin to impress people? Women are the same way. They load this make up on to their face. Even though it is not poisonous, it can still mess up your face in the future and it doesn't show the how the person really is. Then and now are very similar on to how to impress people. I just think people should all just accept the fact that everyone is that same and you do not have to impress people for popularity or attention.

  6. The beauty regimen I think was the most shocking in Queen Elizabeth’s time, was how they painted their faces with vinegar and white lead. I find this shocking because it says it can cause skin problems and slowly poisons the women who use it. This is also shocking because women who might’ve had naturally flawless skin would be ruining their skin by putting on that awful “face paint”. Another outrageously shocking thing they did was wash their faces with mercury. I find this shocking because mercury is dangerous and, like the “Sickness & Health" article said, it is poisonous and can cause nervous system damage. One thing that men and women do today is similar to something they used to do in Ancient times. They would throw up their food to make room for more, while today, people throw up their food so they don’t have that extra weight the food brings. They also get their eyebrows plucked or waxed, like in the Queen Elizabeth era.

  9. It’s pretty amazing how clueless some people are. Even today, if there is something we use that affects us in a negative way, we simply stop using the product. I think that the mercury is the most shocking because it is also the most harmful of the rest. It causes skin irritation, the mercury poisoning can affect the central nervous system, have coordination loss, and damage to speech etc. Today, we do other crazy things. For example, some people go to a tanning salon for a tan, and they are put in rays of heat. That can cause skin damage and cancer from too much sun and heat. The only difference between today and long ago, is the use of our resources. Today, we have many kinds of technology and methods to find safe-to-use products. Back then, it was probably that certain product or nothing at all. In the end, we are all part of the same species and we can do some pretty crazy things to impress others.

  11. The most shocking thing is when women washed their face with mercury. I think this because it caused several harmful things to your body such as affecting the central nervous system, causing loss of coordination, damage to vision, hearing and speech. This is very dangerous because back then they did not have antibiotics to cure anything, the causes of making your skin smoother could risk your life. One thing in modern day men and woman do today that people go out of the way for their face is plastic surgery. I think this is very wrong because you do not have to change yourself so you think your pretty or good enough. Everyone is beautiful in their own ways.

I know that saying “pain is beauty” but this was causing too much pain for beauty and it was definitely not the right tool to become pretty in the 16th and 17th century. The mercuric sulfide was a terrible poison. It could possibly damage your vision or even damage your speech and hearing. The face paint slowly poisoned the person using it! I don't understand why women liked their faces so pale. Some women probably knew that putting that paint on your face wasn't good for them. The mixture caused skin problems. When women started to get sick from it, don't you think other women would have stopped applying it to their faces? I feel that there was no point on making your face pale as a ghost. I understand making your lips red. Or smoothening your face. Or even plucking your eye browns because people even do that today. If you look at some portraits of Queen Elizabeth she looks as white as a ghost with red lips. The materials they used for their faces were vinegar and white lead. Although this is still very common because many men and women risk their lives just for a chance to fix something to "perfect" themselves. In my opinion this is selfish because people should think about how about accepting how they look and think, "oh I'm so happy that I'm living with a nose, mouth, eyes, and ears" and not something like "I don't like how I look"

  30. During the times of Queen Elizabeth the first, women sacrificed a lot for beauty. Queen Elizabeth used dangerous chemicals, such as white lead, to ensure a perfect white, pale face. This chemical slowly poisoned her. She took another poisonous chemical to her lips, mercuric sulfide. This made her lips red and also caused her face to be smooth, at the same time causing damage to her nerves and irritation to the skin.
Some of the crazy things Queen Elizabeth did for her beauty compare to many things people do today for appearances sake. The fact that she used poisonous white lead for a paler face seems like such a wild thing to do. This shocks me because it poisoned and probably slowly killed her, though she was willing to risk it for beauty. This reminds me of many things people do today for their skin. For example, people risk the factor of skin cancer by going to a tanning bed and over tanning. Also, people today over tan at the beach, which can result as a burn instead. However, anyone is willing to go the extra mile for their appearance. Some things are the same now as they always have been, and probably always will be.

  45. the most shocking thing from the 16 and 17 hundreds is the women put mercuric sulfide on their lips. This could damage their nerves if it just touches them. Its probably even worse on your lips because it could get in your mouth. This may cause a reaction more fetal. The women probably knew this wasn't good for them but they just wanted to fit in with the other women in their society. We do things like that in our society today such as getting bot-ox. This is not the smartest thing to do but we do it anyway to fit into society.

  46. In the 1600-1700's I think that putting piousness products on there face was bad I know that beauty hurts but if it hurts why would you keep doing it. I also think that the worst product that they used to make them "pretty" was when then washed their faces with piousness stuff.

  47. In my opinion, all of the beauty regimens that women in the 16th and 17th centuries used were shocking to me. One of the things that they used to make their skin perfectly white was a face paint made with vinegar and white lead. This caused them to have skin problems, and they were slowly poisoned from the poisonous lead in the face paint. They also used an extremely poisonous chemical to make their lips red called mercuric sulfide, and they even used mercury to cleanse their faces. Mercury is a toxin and caused skin irritation and a central nervous system plummet in their coordination, their senses, their speech, and even more. Belladonna was used to make their eyes glimmer, but this is a poisonous shrub. Overall, they shouldn't have risked their lives for their stellar appearance.

Some of the things that the did back then compare to what some of the women in our century do to make themselves look good. Some of the things that people do to make themselves look good is go in tanning beds, put on mascara and eyeliner and other makeup, and even cosmetic surgery. Plastic surgery can cause death or other issues. Overall, they shouldn't have risked their lives for their stellar appearance. They are beautiful the way they are, and death should never be a consequence for looking nice.

  51. The most shocking was the Belladonna in the eyes. If eaten the belladonna can have life threading resulted. Imagine putting it yours eyes, it burned so much. But of course the women only cared about how they looked not their health. The belladonna would slowly make the women sick. The women in this time period took the saying Beaty is pain not lightly but hard core. Women back then would do anything to be pretty, they were crazy! You are perfect just the way you are.

  52. In all the paintings of Queen Elizabeth she always looked unnaturally pale. This is because women wanted to have perfectly white skin since this was what was fashionable at the time. However, this was not the only thing that women did to make them look “pretty”. In my opinion the most shocking “beauty regimen” used by women in the 16th and 17th centuries is using mercury to wash their skin. They had skin irritation and mercury poisoning from using this remedy. Mercury poisoning causes loss of coordination, it affects the central nervous system, damages you sense of vision and hearing, and causes speech impairment.
