Early Colonists -7th grade
After learning about the Roanoke and Jamestown colonies in class, what advice would you have given these colonists that would have helped them succeed in the New World? Which hardships could have been avoided if these colonists had made different choices when establishing their colonies? (QUASI format. Post using first name and period only!)

I think you thing that would have helped them succeed was more food and fresh drinking water. Another that would have helped them succeed in thier colony is crops. They should of worked together more and the men should of worked harder to get food.

After Lerarning about Roanoke and Jamestown in class, the advice i would give them would be and first when you reached the new land you could have brought women. Also to bring lotd of people sdo that you could grow crops and hunt for food. The Hardship That They Could Avoided Was Starvation. They Could have learned to grow crobs and hunt for food on there own. But Becasuse That Wasn't Accomplished Most Of The People Died From Starvation.

First, everyone should have worked together. no one should have been eating eachother and whatever else they wree doing to hurt one another. If someone said "stop! what are we doing?" and really to help eachother and rebel against these rules, things would have been a lot different.
ReplyDeletesome advice that i would give to the colonist at james town would be. to take women with them fron the start of the trip. this would help because the women would help with the cooking and the cleaning and helped start the growing of crops. they also should not have spent so much time looking for gopld as they did and should have started farms to grow the crops that they so desperitly needed during the first winter. the colonists should have also listened to John Smiths rules when he was injured and went back to England for the winter while the people stoped farming and started eating other people for the food that they didnt have during the winter of 1609 - 1610. Evan period 2-3
ReplyDeleteIf I were to give the colonists advise when they first moved there, I would have told them to take women quickly. This way the women would have already been there, they could have made the population higher. Also, they were trained to take care of people and cook and clean so they wouldhave been very helpful. I also would have told them that they should grow crops before winter comes so they would have food during the winter of 1609-1610. Although they had a couple more problems in my opinion these are the biggest and so if i\I had the chance to tell them this I would tell them these two things because they were most important.

The Roanoke colony could have avoided several issues, and the samwe thing with the jamestown colony. However especially Jamestown. If they had brought woman frrom ed the start they would of had a larger population, d could of had more clothes and better prepared food. Also, when they got there they should of first thing planting crops not looking for gold and silver. with roanoke they should had plenty supplies so that John white didnt not have to leave. In my opinion, both colonies could have had easier times if they had simply though before they did.

I would tell them a few different things. One, they should grow all the crops they could before the winter because if not there is a good chance they may die from starvation. Second, I would tell them to bring women from the start. If they followed my advice, there would be families and happier people and more people would be born to work when they were old enough. Last, if the rumor that canabalism was true in jamestown, why did they eat eachother? If you think about it, if they would have grown enough crops they would have food and not need to munch on gross, dead, human bodies!

Roanoke: If the people of Roanoke hadn't been mean to the indians, then they wouldn't be attacked. They also could have farmed more.
ReplyDeleteJamestown: If Jamestown would have been nicer to the indians, they wouldn't have been attacked. They also could have farmed more instead of looking for gold.
Justin and Tim per.5-9A
I belive if that they should not spend so much time on looking for gold and more time gathering crops. To have provented many casualties by not looking for gold thats not there and prepared for the storms and winter. That is our advice for the James town Coloney.
ReplyDeleteBlake, Sean, Mark. 5-9 a 9-26-11
After learning about Jamestown and Roanoke, I would have told them that gold doesn't support survival. Farming provides foodand in the "Starving Time" they would have starved. More food would be acquired and the death toll would be lowered. Starvation and disease would have been avoided. If they had done these things, history would be different, maybe less tragic.
ReplyDeleteMichael B Period 5-9 A
I believe that they sould have a better branch of goverment. There goverment was very strict if they didnt do anything for the people they would have no food they should just have let them slide a few times so they wouldnt die.
ReplyDeleteRaymond Jason 5-9 a 9-26-11
There are many things that the colonists did wrong. At Jamestown instead of hunting and farming, they sat around all day and looked for gold! Both colonies should have also been nicer to the indians. One of the theories about Roanoke was that the indians killed them all! They also should have planned ahead .
ReplyDeleteJimmy and Michal M per. 2-3b
after reading about the colonists in class the advice i would give them is that they should focus more on building a comunity and than send maybe 10 guys to look for gold but also create a small millitary of around 25 to protect from the natives but also send people back to get more people from england
ReplyDeletejason p and sharvin s
After learning about the colonists in class, I think there wouldn't of been wars if they would of been kind and nicer to the indians. If Jamestown never would of been in a starvation period. Maybe the indians might of shared crops but anyway if they didnt share crops there wouldnt be deaths from indian wars. They should of planted farms ahead because they just serched for gold and then they relied on the indians for food and they were is a drought so they didnt have food to spare.
ReplyDeleteRichard DeW Patrick K Per. 2-3 B
I would have told them to make friends with the people that were already there. That way, they can basically get as much as they want. They also should have brought the women over with them the first time. They would have made the population larger. The women knew how to cook and make clothes, and that's what they needed. if they had them from the start, they may not have had the "starving time." They should have started with making crops, not ended with it. They would need it to make more and more crops.
ReplyDeleteShannon J. Period 2-3(B)
After reading about Roanoke and Jamestown I thought that some advice I can give them is that you shouldn't drink all your water on the first day you should save some. Don't eat all your food you will need soem for afterwards because you don't want to die of starvation I know I wouldn't so I would save my food and water that I only have. In conclusion, I give that advice because you dont wanna die over starvation or die because you dont have any more water.

After reading about Roanoke and Jamestown Colonies, the advice that I would give them to succed in the new world would be that working was an important part back then. Even though you colonists suffered, working did make a difference. When John Smith said no work no food that helped the Jamestown colony alot.
ReplyDeleteChris 2-3 B
The only advice that we can give to the Jamestown colonists is to not to have been so lazy! If they had only worked more, a lot more people would have survived. Additionally, they would have had the essential needs to survive.
ReplyDeleteBy: Mackenzie & Veronica Period 2-3 B
The advice i would give the colonists is to bring lots of food and supplies to the new world. Because there are little resources here.

Jamestown colonists should not have been so lazY First off, I would expect them to learn their lesson about the first time of their starvation! When John Smith left, they should have know to keep up their good work and keep on growing their crops. I would expect them to learn their lesson about starvation!
ReplyDeleteNatasha Period 9-10B
The advice I would give to these colonist was to be more prepared. The colonists of jamestown were to busy searching for gold that they couldn't even take care of themselves. Even after John Smith made them work they still went back to search for gold and which started the starvating time of Jamestown and one of the darkest times for Jamestown. In Roanoke, If i were part of the colonist i would;ve gave John White more information of where we have went to and maybe even today they could've never been the lost colony a maybe the first permanent colony of America. But also for John White if they didn't wait till the next morning to search for the lost colony then maybe they would have found the 113 people.

If I could tell the early colonies what they should do differently would be that they should bring crop seeds to Virginia and plant them as soon as they get there and until the crop grows they can live off of food they had brought from England. In addition, try to be nicer to the Indians so they can tell you their ways on how to survive during the winter and so they won't kill you. They could have done this so they could avoid death and starvation. Maybe we would still have these colonies today is they had done these things.
I think that the colonists should have brought the women over the second time. They wouldn't want to bring them over the first time in case it was unsafe because women don't have swords or even if they did they wouldn't be able to fight off Native Americans. Also, the men should have made sure they had enough food for the winter before they went out looking for gold. Or, if they did bring the women the women could have helped with the planting and harvesting, unless they were pregnant or had a young baby. If they were pregnant then obviously the the husband would have to put off finding gold until the baby was born. What's more important, you and your family or how much money you have?
ReplyDeleteGabby G period:8-10B
The advice that I would given the colonist would be to make sure you bring ALOT of supplies, like food, and water.

ReplyDeleteSome advice i would give is that instead of being lazy and just waiting for the Native Ameicans to give them their food, they should get off their butts and start growing crops, and start finding water. When John Smith was there he made you all work and you had food an don't forget the motto "don't work, don't eat." When he got injured and returned to Virginia you all got lazy again and you got to starving times.
After learning about the colonists and Jamestown some advcie I would give the colonists is that they should of planted there crops and the colonist should of been more a were that winter was coming so that they could of been prepared. Since the colonists were more interested about the gold.
ReplyDeleteNicolette 2-3(A)
After learning about both of the Roanoke and Jamestown,we could give so much advice to the colonists. First, we would give Roanoke the advice of being a better lookout for Native Americans that might kill them in their sleep. Also, Roanoke could have learned more from the Native Americans including how to hunt. Next,Jamestown could have worked harder, especially on the farm. If they farmed better, than they would have had more food, instead of starving to death. Perhaps one day someone will establish similar colonies to these two.
ReplyDeleteColin Chris 5-9 A
After learning about both of the Roanoke and Jamestown colonies my advice to them would be supplies. Bring more supplies, more water, more food and be prepared to do lots of hard farming work to grow more food.Farming and supplies would be important for their success not worrying about gold and riches and not fighting the natives. If relationships had been kept good with the indians and lots of supplies were brought along and they had been prepared for the farming work, the colonies could have been alot more succsesfull.

ReplyDeleteAfter learning about the Jamestown and Roanoke colonies i would tell them to bring more supplies. Suppleis like food, water, and better supplies to make good shelters. Tell them to do farm work or dont get any food like John Rolfe said. I would also tell them not to find gold and other money so they wouldnt have the horribe winter they had. By doing that out of 150 people 60 survived the winter. If John Wjite didnt leave the indians and the colonist would have been better friends.

Well, first off, they should have gotten a strong leadership (or many) to command everything and make sure everything goes well and they would thrive and be successful. Second, they should have brought an abundance of food and fresh water, and started growing crops early, as opposed to starting to grow them when they run out of their regular food, so they would have a consistent supply of it. Also, they should've kept their guard up for the Native Americans, otherwise they might've survived!!!
ReplyDeleteNick V. P 2-3 A
Some advice i would give the colonists is to work together to get the food, water, and other supplies they all needed. Instead of sitting around and waiting for things that might never show up. In addition, they should of bought some crops and grew them. This way it would give them the food the needed, and would of saved deaths.
ReplyDeleteRebecca W period 5-9 A day
My advice to the colonists would be, work together has a team. They should have worked as a team to get water, food & more supplies that they needed and not want. They should have tried their BEST but instead they didn't they were just hoping. But most importantly they should have had another plan if the other one didn't work

After learning about the Roanoke and Jamestown colonies, the advice I would have given the colonists would be to learn how to grow their own crops. If colonists learned how to grow their own crops, they wouldn't have starved since they no longer had Native American support when they were hungry. Also, this would have prevented colonists from being so miserable during the "starving time". If colonists at Roanoke and Jamestown were to follow this advice, fewer lives would have been lost.
ReplyDeleteBrett Period 5/9 A
After previously learning about Roanoke and Jamestown some advice I would have given, would be to be more prepaired .As in bring more non perishable food, more water and lastly more weapons . I think this because i think both these colonies failed because because of poor planning.I wonder what would have happened if they had had a larger food supply and more weapons on hand?
ReplyDeleteEmmie C 5-9A
i think that if The jamestown colony had brought working men women and children they could have made it through the winter without and starvation or disease.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading about the Jamestown colony in Social studies i learned one fatal mistake they made. they only sent upper class, never worked a day in their life men. In my opinion, i think they should have sent working men women and children along with the other men. That way the Rich men go looking for gold, the working men hunt and build and the women and children tend to houses and crops. This way they would have made it through the starving time without any death and it would have been increasingly easy!
ReplyDeleteCollin H. Period 2/3 A
After reading about the jamestown and roanoke colonies I believe that they shouldve focused more on the future then then the present. I think that they should have spent more time planting and getting supplies for upcoming winters and expanded their alliances with the indians and also finding sustainable water sources. They also shouldve focused on getting their settlement well sustained and built up before focusing all their time on gold and other precious metals and valuables. If they did these things they probaly would have had alot less problems then what they faced.
ReplyDeleteShannon F Period 2-3 B Day
After reading about the Jamestown and Roanoke colonies I would have told the colonists to treat the Indians with more respect. If that had happened the Indians wouldn't always be trying to kill the colonists and might've given them food during the ''starving time''. Also, the colonists would've had more food if they developed other methods of getting food like fishing or hunting with arrows. However, the settlers could have avoided starvation altogether by building houses when they landed in Virginia instead of searching for gold that was not there. Finally, one last piece of advice is that the settlers should have kept John Smith's advice, possibly reducing the deaths after he left.
ReplyDeleteDylan P 2-3 B
My advice to the colonist's would have been to meet new people and become friends. If the colonists's became friends they might have been able to get more crops, fresh water and food to eat because different people have many different supplies. So if they all worked together I believe things may have went better for the colonists.
ReplyDelete-Alyssa P 2-3 B
After learning about James town in class I think that they should have grown crops such as tobacco right from the start, and not spend time looking for gold that was not there. They also should have come with women so that the men would be more content. Also they could have raised kids into farming so that when they are old enough they can work. Those are just some ideas that could have made Roanoke more successful.
ReplyDeleteHappy Jack Period-8.9.10
After reading about both the Roanoke and the Jamestown colonies, the advice I would give them would be that they should not have been so lazy, they should have tried to work together and they should have learned how to survive without the help of the natives. If the Jamestown colonists would have tried to grow crops then they would have avoided the "Starving Time" and survived.
ReplyDeleteValerie 2-3B
They could have stored their food on their way to the main land a lot better because half of the supplies were destroyed in the journey. They also could have thought about the possibility of storms so they could have brought a compass. There were many set backs backs that could have been avoided but weren't so they didn't do the best they could have done. If they took time to do all this they maybe would have been more successful in their journey to the new land.
ReplyDeleteThe awesome:Chris Williams and Raymond 5-7A
After learning about Roanoke and Jamestown I think what would have helped the colonists a lot would be too offer the Indians some things in return for their help so the indians would help them better and more so they could have been more of allies than just taking making them mad and having them fight with each other. For Roanoke they also should have sent a representitive back to England than their leader so they would be more unified for whatever wiped them out while John White was gone.
