The person I feel that was most responsible for the begining of the Civil War was Harriet Beecher Stowe.I think this because she wrote a book about how the slaves were actually treated, other than how the slave owners described. This made the slave free states really upset. The south were so mad because they just wanted to own slaves. The South removed themselfs from the North and became the Southern Confederate states. The North was fighting for the Constitution to be held, "all men are created equal" where as the South wanted to have the freedom to own slaves. All this fighting in a war just because of one little girl's book. This is how i think the Civil War started.

I agree Chris! She had alot of influence on the North. If it wasn't for this book, then the war may not have started at all.

The event most responsible for the launching of the civil war was the South seceding from the Union. Abraham Lincoln was infuriated and declared war just to keep his country together. He knew he needed the Southern states back, so he fought to retain them. That's what a good leader should do. In the end, it was clearly the right decision.

I feel that Harriet Beecher Stowe was most responsible for the launching of the Civil War. If she never had expressed her opinion that vehemently, I don't think the War that became the Civil War would have been all that bad. She wrote this entire book about how the slaves were treated which of course was badly so the owners were not happy about it. There were many slave owners so that lead to many unhappy, angry people. I think she did the right thing because although it may have been the main cause for the war, she still got her opinion out there and showed that she cared about the way people were treated

I think that she didn't do anything wrong. she is a women and she was one of a couple women who voiced their opinions freely. its good that you think she did the right thing, but you think one book started this whole war? Not very likely.
DeleteHaley P 2/3A
I agree with you. It was good that she wrote the book. If she had not wrote it then we might still have slavery today. It is important that the North knew exactly what was happening in the country that was supposed to allow everyone to be free. Although, I do agree with Haley. It was not just the book, but it was one of the main reasons that this war even started.

In my opinion, I feel that Abraham Lincoln was most responsible. I feel this way because when Abraham Lincoln became president and wanted to take away slavery, many people didn't like that and that's basically one of the reasons it led to the Civil war.

In my opinion i believe that the south wanting to fully separate from the union caused the civil war. My reasoning is because the confederates wanting to separate triggered all of the tension and infuriated Lincoln. Lincoln wanted the south to stay so once he found out what was brewing the war began

ReplyDeleteIn my opinion I think that Abe Lincoln caused the civil war. I think this because he could have done something to stop the south but he did not. He is the president he could have passed a law or something. And everyone who said Harriet Beecher Stowe your wrong. She wrote a book on slavery how could that have started a huge war?

I personally think the tension between the south and the north caused the war. Also, Abe Lincoln, Abe made a grave sacrifice going to war. He felt that the south would be split apart and there would be two countries. Plus, the south caused the war as in threatening to split apart. Personally, I believe there were many causes to the Civil war.

In my opinion the causes of civil war was mostly slavery because North(Union) did not want the slavery but South(Confederacy) wanted to have slavery in their state. When George Washington saw the slavery and what happens with them George Washington did not like it and wanted to stop the slavery and south didn't wanted to stop the slavery and then north and south had a war and people were killing their own people. When President George Washington wrote and a lot of bodies were on the battlefields and Union won the war and the slaves wanted to stop the slavery and they had joined the Union army to stop the slavery and Some of the slaves were getting killed and they had to hide from the south because south did not wanted to fight the slaves against them and the war ended and all of the slaves were free and all of the slaves had freedom.

I beleive that the war was started because of Jefferson Davis and Abe Lincoln. Now, I am not going to say that the war started for no reason, but the main causes of it were from these men. I don't mean causes in a bad way though. Now is Jefferson Davis had stopped being so stubborn and stayed part of the United States and didn't care, the war probably wouldn't of happened. But he wanted to break away and that is when Lincoln stepped in. He was the one who refused to let Davis break away which was another reason for the war. However if both of these people hadn't been so stubborn, and let each other do what they please, the world may have had slavery today still. Would the world be the same if these men hadn't made these decisions? Probably not.

I believe that the main cause of the Civil War was Abraham Lincoln's election. It was kind of like the last straw for the Southerners. They knew that he was going to take away their slavery, and that was too much for them to handle anymore. Everyone just couldn't stand it anymore. Nonetheless, I do have to say that Uncle Tom's Cabin had a lot of influence on the Northerners. It really put into sight how terrible slavery really was. It showed them that they had to do something other then just tolerate the South. They had to make sure that they kept the country together and stopped slavery. In my opinion, I think that if Abraham Lincoln had not been elected president then the war would have never started. He was like the last piece of coal in the fire that was burning in the south, and they just could not take it any longer.

There were many causes of the Civil War but one was clearly the reason behind the war and it was...... SLAVERY! Some people hated and some people loved it! The people in the free states were against slavery where the slave states on the other hand were all for it! When Abe wanted to do something about slavery in all states the southerners were not at all happy about it! They thought that because they are in America and no one could tell them what to do that they could do what ever they wanted even if that meant slavery! As time went on the tension grew between the North and the South and eventually it broke out into a war...that will soon become the Civil War!

I believe the main cause behind the Civil War was the North and South's different views. For instance, the North opposed slavery. However, the South thought slavery was the most important aspect to their life. Furthermore, the North was mainly industrial. While, the South depended solely on agriculture. Finally, the Civil War occurred due to two different views on life.
ReplyDeleteBrett B P 5/9 A
I strongly believe the main cause of the Civil War was how people thought about slaves in the North and the South. Although that was supposed to be the main reason of the war, many people joined to defend their state. The South wanted slaves because most people owned farmland and it may be to big to take care of yourself. The North on the other hand didn't have many farms but even if they did they had more of a population. The North obviously won the war and now their is no slavery.
ReplyDeleteChris F. 2-3 B
I think there were many causes of the Civil war. Sure, many people think that Harriet Beecher Stowe started the war. But, I think she only had a little influence on slaves. Other people, like John Brown had a much higher influence simply because he turned to violence. The South was angry about it, and wanted revenge. Also, freed slaves like Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman, got the South angry because they vehemently voiced their opinions. But, I think the two main reasons the war started was because of the the Kansas- Nebraska act. It quickly turned bloody, with pro slavery people on one side and anti slavery settlers on the other. It was almost like the first true battle of the war. Also, Lincolns election could have been another cause because he was strongly against slavery.
ReplyDeleteJames L per 2/3 B
Jimmy,
DeleteExcellent answer. Many historians agree that the Kansas-Nebraska Act was truly the event that pushed both sides over the edge. It essentially threw out the Missouri Compromise and allowed people to decide for themselves if their territory would be slave or free. Not a great idea!

I think the main cause of the civil war was if slavery was to be allowed or not. I think this was one of the main causes of the civil war because the South wanted slavery and the North wanted there to be no slavery. I think another cause of the Civil War was Harriet Beecher Stowe. I think Harriet Beecher Stowe was another main reason for the cause of the Civil War because she published a book about how slaves really felt, and were treated. I think this put on a lot of tension between the South and North because the South felt that slavery wasn't bad and the North wanted to abolish it, and felt that it was unfair that a different race should be treated horribly compared to another race.
ReplyDeleteRich DeG 2-3B
I feel like Harriet Beecher Stowe was the one who started the war because she was a slave and wanted to start a book that's called "Uncle Tom's Cabin" and it is about stopping slavery. If she didn't write the book or tell people her feelings the war wouldn't of have started after all. There were a lot of battles in the Civil War and I think the Union won half of the battles. She did a good thing because in her book it talked about how slaves hated working for people and she just had a thought and wanted to stop it. When Abraham became president she got happy because Abraham wanted to stop slavery as well. So I strongly agree that Harriet started the Civil War.

I believe there were many causes of the Civil War. One reason is slavery. Now many people had different opinions about slavery but what I think really but it over the top was a book called "Uncle Tom's Cabin" by Harriet Beecher Stowe. I believe her book started the war because it let people know how brutal slavery really was. People who supported slavery told others they treated their slaves like family; gave them clothes, feed them and never wanted to hurt. However those people lied. As soon as others found out the truth they knew it was wrong and had to be stopped.
ReplyDeleteValerie P. 2/3B
In my opinion, the main cause of the Civil War was Abraham Lincoln's election. Once he was made president, everyone had to finally decide if they wanted to be a slave owner, or not. This brought fights between each state, which eventually led the Southern states to break away from America, and split the nation into two. Obviously, this is what really triggered the war, because when this happened, the North wanted to unite again, and decided to declare war against the Confederacy. So, if you trace back the steps, you come to the conclusion that Lincoln being elected president started the war. Even though he did cause a war, I am still very glad that he was president; without him, America might still be pro slavery!

I agree with many others that when the South seceded from the Union it was an invitation to war. Abraham Lincoln was elected to keep the nation together and to help them settle their differences. The South seceding was the opposite of what Lincoln wanted. He started the war to keep the country together, which he thought was very important. After all, Lincoln did say, "A house divided cannot stand."
ReplyDeleteJack K. Per. 8-10B
I feel that the the election of Abraham Lincoln was most responsible for the Civil War. The southerners felt threatened by Lincoln because they thought (and they were right) that he would try to free the slaves. I believe this pushed the southerners over the edge and made them try to take over Fort Sumter, which is where the first shots of the Civil War were fired and it was only a year after Lincoln's election. Other things had created trouble in the past, such as the fugitive slave law, but a different president may have ignored it and tried to let things calm down. Lincoln, who despised slavery wasn’t willing to give into the South, thus causing the Civil War.

I believe that the cause of the Civil War was when the South seceded. That was because the North and the South believed in other things than just slavery. The South wanted state rights while the North wanted country rights. That's what I believe started the war.
