Mystery of the Lost Colony
After learning about the theories of the lost colony of Roanoke, what is YOUR theory behind the disappearance of the settlers? Use factual evidence and/or historically based theories to support your opinion! (first name, last initial and period only!!)
I think that the settelers died and some sailed to the indians. Their bodies decaed over time and the bones were washed away by erosion. I think that because they had no food because they plainted their crops at the dry season. Plus some of the settelers sailed away so that explains the log with letters carved in in.

I THINK THAT THE SETTLERS OF ROANOKE GOT KILLED. I STRONGLY AGREE WITH THIS ANSWER BECAUSE WHEN THE NATIVE AMERICANS GOT TO ROANOKE THEY FOUND NOTHING NO BODYS NO GRAVES. BUT WHEN JOHN WHITE GOT THERE HE DID FIND A SKULL ON IT AND A WORD CARVED INTO IT THAT READ CROTOAN.THEY TRYED DIGGING BUT FOUND NOTHING THEY ANOLY LOOKED IN ONE AREA NOT THINKING TO LOOK ANYWHERE ELSE. SO I THINK THAT THE PEOPLE OF ROANOKE WERE KILLED BY THE NATIVE AMERICANS. NICK R period 3-4 A
ReplyDeleteMaybe the bodies were eaten by wild animals not taken by the indians. Or they were so decompposed they could not find them.

My theory about what happened to the people on Roanoke is that they died from natural causes. Thirst, hunger, sickness. When John White and his men came back to the island they saw graves and dead bodies all around. The colony was definitely still there but it might have been missing wood or rotten. John went back to England and lied to the English government so they would go back and try again the colonize in America.

What I think what happen to the Lost Colony of Roanke is that a hurricane came in and destroed the colony. The reason why I think this is because since a catagory 5 hurricane can destroy a city like hurricane Katrina just imagane what a catagory 1 could do to a little village like Roanoke.Since there was no TV to tell them that there was a hurricane came in and destroed the buildings and all of the people. Also a bunce of big waves could of draged intothe middle of the Alantic ocean.
ReplyDeleteHunterM peroid3/4A
I think there was a sickness going around and it spreaded threw the settlement. Then the indians discovered all the bodies dead and they burnt them for a ritual and left CRO meaning that they discovered what happen.
ReplyDeleteLiam McGregor p. a 3-4
My theory about what happend to the settlers on Roanoke is the Croatan indians massicured them. the reason why they did not find any bodies was because in the three years John White was in England the Croatans brought the Bodies to Croatan island. the reason i know the settlers diden't just leave Roanoke was because we found a Labratory underground at Roanoke and there was still mixtures in the lab. If the settlers just left Roanoke the scientist would have brought his mixtures so they had to of got murdered. the reason why i think it was the Croatans that killed the settlers was because there was a tree carving that said "CRO". this is a unsolved mystery but this is my theory
ReplyDeleteAidan Mccann 5-9 A
I think that the indians were massacered and then left to rot and than john smith went to where they were massacered and then took the bodys in the ocean and then took the graves and sent them into the sea as well he did this soo the queen could start a new world.

I think the lost colony of roanoke had died and john whites men covered it up so they could colonize america and they didnt want people to know. I believe this because john white and his men are the only ones who went on the island to find out what happened so you have no proof if they died cause there was no other witnesses. Also there was no way to even have food on that island and there has been a series of droughts.Lastly the tree with the letters C.R.O was never found so theres no proof of them going to the island. Destinee.W 5-9 A
ReplyDeleteI think they left to go to the swamp place to live with the indians. So they set sail and when they got there they lived with the indians. After living with the indians for so long they started to live and act like them. Thats why today and back then we have grey eyed indians. But the Roanoke people decided to go back to roanoke because they didnt want other people to see take their things like the lab one guy had. But as they were sailing there was a storm and they all died. Thats why there are no bones found just the lab thing left behind

The story of the Roanoke colony is definataly a mystery but i think i have a good theory. I think because of the drought the colony ran out of water and the colony drank the ocean water witch can be fatal to drink so the salt became so corrosive that it ate away at their bones leaving no trace of the people from the colony ever dieing
ReplyDeleteEricL period8/9
My theory is that when john white came to roanoke. He found that tree and he thought it meant the island or tribe, but really it was a indian word an old tribe one . When john thought it was the whites that wrought it but it was the indians.
ReplyDeletehosea m 5-9a
i think that when john white came back he found the bodies rotten and gross. he burned the bodies and dumped the ashes in the sea. as he went through the bodies he did not find Virgina. He went into her little hut and found a log that said CRO. he knew instanly that she went with the croatons

I think the settlers died by starvation dehydration
ReplyDeleteand they went crazy and attacked the Indians and forced them to defined and kill the colonist and they left one skeleton as a sign of victory
MATTHEW WYCKOFF 10-11 B
I think that the settlers were captured by the Spanish, and put on a ship. the ship sank and the bodies are in the ocean and were never found. the Spanish covered it up by carving CRO on the trees so no one would suspect.
ReplyDeleteAmanda M. Period 3/4 A
I think that the settlers were killed but there was one left. The one ran away and eventually was killed after everyone else. He or she came back to the village and was killed. The settlers must have been hiding and shot them. When the body rotted it had left the skull.
ReplyDeleteJoel Vargas Period 3-4B
I think the settlers joined the indian tribe because that would explain the reason why CRO was craved in the tree. Later after joining the indian tribe all the settlers died of dehydration which would explain the lack of growth of the trees in a period time. I don't think the indians made graves so they threw the bodies into the ocean.

I believe that the Croaton indians died from the Chesapeake Bay indiand and then they died from the heat. I think Sir Walter Raliegh saw all of this then told the Queen that they all disapeared so that he could get money.
ReplyDeleteI think that all the settlers were killed by the indians and they berried them in another site and they only been digging in that one site so they havent found anything and they put the skull there to scare them away

ReplyDeleteRyan rhatigan 5/9B
My theory behind the disappearance of the settlers is that they joined the people already on Roanoke. They went to join them so they wouldnt be killed by the Spanish. The random skull they could have found or used someones dead body from, with CRO written on the tree to throw off the Spanish. They had to throw off the Spanish so they would think they were dead and leave them alone. So the poeple that came back to Roanoke with supplies 3 years later werent sapposed to see the one skull next to the tree with CRO written on it. It really wasntmeant to throw them off or make them think anything.

My theory behind Roanoke is that all of the settlers died because of the drought. Once they died, John White came back, discovered them, and got scared. After that he got them all on his ship and brought them far out to sea. Way out there he dumped all of the bodies overboard.

My theory about Roanoke Island is that the island was attacked and only half the men survied. The other half went back but by order of the queen they had to get rid of the bodies and never tell anybody that they went or what it was like in america or be killed. They wanted people to go back.
ReplyDeleteAlex P
Period 5-9A
My theory about Roanoke was that the Indians thought that the settlers were trying to steal there land so they killed them. Later John White found them all dead and reported the news back to the queen. She wanTed more people to live there so she could make more money off there taxes, so she told him to keep it a secret. When John White returned to Roanoke he dumped all the dead bodies into the ocean. He wrote CRO and left a skull near a tree to let him remember of all the people who died.
ReplyDeleteST
I think that the Croaton indian tribe killed the colonists. I think the indians told the settlers that they would give them food, which the colonists couldn't get due to the drought. Then the indians killed them all and burned the bodies. CRO is on a tree because one colonist wrote it there just in case something happened.
ReplyDeleteKevin F Period 3/4 b
I think that the missing colonists were in a war with Spain. Some of colonists were kept captive and the rest ran way. The ran way to the Idians and asked for help. The idians gave them the help they needed, the showed the colonists what to eat, drink, and how to grow food. Last, the craved CRO in a tree to keep the spanish way from the area.
ReplyDeleteStanley w period 10/11b
My theory of what happened to Roanoke is they got killed by the Croatan indians. Thats why i think CRO is carved in the tree because when the Crooatan came after them one man tried to write croatan is coming after us in the tree so John Whit would no where they were and what happened to them when he was gone.
ReplyDeleteBrendan D
Period 3/4 b
i think that the settlers in the colony of Roanoke died. They most likely died because of the draught. The lack of water probably killed off all of there food sources. They could have also died from dehydrration. There was 800 years without rain. The Croatan indians were hostile. They did not the colonist. They may have forced the colonist to stay in the fort where they had no food supply or water.

I think that the settlers fled their island do to water shortage and Indians. And nobody ever looked on the island CRO so we will never know if they left the island or died.

We think that the settlers died from a drought, this is because there is a report from Archaeologists that states that there is tree-ring data suggest that there has been a drought. It might of been the worst drought ever!

I think The Indians killed the settlers. Then throw the bodies in the water.before killing the last person he carved cro into a log. Patrick G Per5-9b
ReplyDeleteWhat I think happened to the settlers in Roanoke was that they died from the drought. They came here in a very bad time, they could not plant crops or build houses because it was too cold. I think that the whole thing about John White coming back and everybody was gone was a lie, I think that he found them all dead because of the drought and he buried them. I think this because I think John White wanted people to still come but most people would not want to come because of everyone dying.

I think that the settlers died from starvation. There was no sign of food and water. By the time that the king went to the island, he waited three years. So, when he waited the bodies disinigrated.
ReplyDeleteKatie G 5-6 A
I think that the people of Roanoke might have died from starvation! I do not know why they didnt see bodies though! My explanation for this is the people who visited later on wanted to cover everything up so they didnt tell anyone. I think that they didnt want everyone to know and then later on when people went back, everything was gone! Probably because the people who had visited earlier could have took the bodies and then burned them or the bodies were gone by then!
ReplyDeleteEmily A Per. 5-9
i think that if the village was destroyed by a storm the fence around the colony would have been damaged but it was intact. If they were killed by diseases the bodies would have been found.
ReplyDeletei think the people of Roanoke was very hungry so they went with the Croatians to eat food and drink water. The skull next to the block of wood that spelt C.R.O. on it. that was the person who disobeyed the Croatians and they killed him. Next the backpacks the people of Roanoke had were left on the ground because if the people of Roanoke wanted to come with the Croatians they would have to leave their things on the ground in case of the weapons they might have.

ReplyDeleteI believe that it was all a conspiracy and the colonists actually died of dehydration. First of all, it would make sense that no bodies were found. John White would have hidden them. In addition, back then it would have made sense not to tell people the real story. If you made money at the new land you would want people to return. I don't think people would want to go to a place where a whole colony had died. Finally we wouldn't have found any evidence because someone most likely destroyed it. I wonder if this theory will ever be proven correct.

Based on evidence and in my own opinion, I think the settlers of Roanoke were killed by the Indians Evidence that suggests this is in 1603, another English ship stopped at Roanoke Island before sailing back to England. Six men went ashore to explore, but Indians killed five of the men and the surviving man was able to write his story. In my opinion, the Indians felt that this was their land.
ReplyDeletePatrickH. period 5-9B
I think that the settlers of Roanoke went and followed one of the Native tribes. I believe this is what really happened because there would have been some sort of evidence if Roanoke was attacked and all the settlers were killed. I think the most reasonable explanation is that they went with a tribe.
ReplyDeleteJess Emme 3/4A
My theory on the disappearance of Roanoke is that they joined the Croatans. I think this because of the drought. Roanoke didn't have water or crops so the Croatans offered to help. That's why they carved CRO into the tree, so John White would know where they went. Also, John White lied about finding one skull, he probably found at least a few bodies. He then burned the bodies and dumped the ashes into the ocean to get rid of the evidence.
ReplyDeleteMackenzie Finley 10-11 A
What I think would of happened to the Roanoke Colony was that they joined sides with Croatons natives. John White said there were letters written that spelled Croatons on the side of a tree but I think that was a message saying They were going to live with them. Croatons were a really friendly tribe with the people of Roanoke and they probally understood that Roanoke was at a drought and could've of been killed by the spanish at anytime. That is why I think Croatons would've of had help the people of Roanoke

After the disapearence of the community i think they just ran away from there town then there was a drout
ReplyDeleteI think that the colony of Roanoke probably got attacked and taken away by the Spanish. They didnt have a very good location and they did have enemies so i think that is the most likely.

There could've been an incurable disease and people abondoned their colony and went to the indians to avoid being infected.
