After learning about the theories of the lost colony of Roanoke, is it possible that John White and/or Queen Elizabeth knew the truth but decided to cover it up? Could this be an example in history of a government conspiracy? Why/why not?

ReplyDeleteNo I don't think Queen Elizabeth nor John White had anything to do with or knew anything bout the disappearance of the settlers of Roanoke.
DeleteWhat I believe happened to the settlers of Roanoke was they bonded with the Natives and mixed in with their way of life. I also believe, they were sort of brainwashed into thinking the English were evil people and made to look like the Indians so no one but them could tell them apart.
So no I don't this could of been a example in history as a government conspiracy

I don't believe that John White OR Queen Elizabeth knew the truth of what happened at Roanoke. This is my belief because all of the theory's are of starvation, dehydration, or being killed by the natives. So, they couldn't have had anything to do with any of these theory's.
ReplyDeleteNo, I don't think that this is an example of a government conspiracy because the government didn't have anything to do with it except for the ships even going there.

After learning about the theories of the lost colony of Roanoke, yes i do think it is possible that John White and/or Queen Elizabeth knew the truth but decided to cover it up and leave it as a mystery. If they did cover up the mystery of Roanoke, they did so the explorers of England wouldn't get scared and not want to explore any further of the New World.Yes, this could be an act of a government conspiracy because they kept the secret of how all the Roanoke colonist supposedly "disappeared", but even if John White and/or Queen Elizabeth covered the case up, i'm glad they did or we might not be speaking English here in North America today if they didn't.

After learning about the lost Colony i do think that john white or Queen Elizabeth knew the truth about what had happened because when john white returned he found the graves of all the people that died and later on in life they found a girl that was buried in the ground and going back when john white saw the graves he only kept it to his self so that is i think john white knew about this

ReplyDeleteIn my opinion The civilization of Roanoke was not a cover up by the queen and john smith but they joined the Indian tribes. I would like to know if they were to be formed into the other tribes throughout the area.I believe that we would know more about the civilization if archaeologists found the bodies of the deceased. If they did then i would believe that the colony was destroyed by Indians. I believe that the Roanoke was just forgotten about and the people joined the Indian tribes. This my hypothesis about the Roanoke civilization.

After leaning about the lost colony I think that John White and queen Elizabeth wanted to leave it a mystery because maybe they don't want anyone finding the gold. But maybe in the future someone will find it.

I strongly believe that the king and Queen of England had to do something in the disappearances in Roanoke. I believed that the monarchs of England wanted to have a settlement on the new land. If they told the English people that the Roanoke colonists were slaughtered by an unknown enemy. There would not be another English exploration to the new land in a long time.
ReplyDeleteThe English would eventually have a permanent English settlement, Jamestown. I believe the king and Queen of England lied to its people and covered up the lost colony of Roanoke. As for this mystery invader that destroyed everything in its path, is probably the natives on the island. On a tree near the settlement of Roanoke was a mark of the Croatian Indians who lived near Roanoke. When other explorers went searching for the lost colony of Roanoke the were attacked and sometimes even killed. I believe the Croatian Indians massacred the colonists and The English King and Queen covered up the of the lost English settlement of Roanoke.
The comment above I wrote it.

I completely agree with the theory that Queen Elizabeth told White to lie. This in fact, was MY theory on the assignment a few days back. There is no real logical explanation for a whole city to just magically vanish. Therefore, White must’ve not told the truth. I have many reasons supporting this theory, one being that if the people back in England heard that the people died, they would flip out and no one would want to go to Roanoke again. So instead, he told them they disappeared, starting rumors like “The English settlement moved to the swamplands where they lived with the Indians” rather than being attacked by them. This let people still have hope, and many others did decide to sail to Roanoke. In conclusion I believe that John White didn’t necassarily want to lie, but Queen Elizabeth told him to do so, and so he did. But this means that we still have a chance of finding real evidence about what happened to The Lost Colony. Will we ever be sure about what happened? I don’t know, but I do hope that I’m alive when, and if, we do.
ReplyDeleteMatthew G 1-2
I agree with your opinion 100%. For instance, when you used the example of how “they would flip out and no one would want to go to Roanoke again.” Is a prime example of how this would be a drastic loss for Queen Elizabeth since she founded the voyage; so, it’s logical to have the inference that she covered it up leaving a variety of theories on what happened to the Lost Colony. Just like in present day, our society has bad habits of telling white lies and trying to hide our mistakes, because of this similarity multiple parts of our history have unanswered questions, this being one. ~ Sophia Z. DeleteI agree with the fact that Queen Elizabeth told John White to lie. I mean at first I thought that the settlers might have moved back into the swamp-lands with the native americans, but now I think that the queen may have had something to do with it. So basically,John White lied because the queen told him to. He had thought (along with the queen) that if he told the people they had got murdered the people would flip out. Alot of other people went on boats and searched for the lost colony. But they were never found.

Deleteno i don't think that John and Queen Elisabeth had anything to do with it since John left and then when he came back everyone was gone. And the only clue he had was the tree that said Croatian on it.
ReplyDeleteWhat could of happened was the Croatian Indians could have betrayed John for some reason. Why else would the Croatian Indians carve there tribe name into the tree right outside of camp.I think that it is very possible that they could have betrayed them not letting John know.
nicholas D 1-2
I do not believe that Queen Elizabeth or John White had anything to do with the disappearance of the people of Roanoke. If they knew about it and decided to cover it up, why would the tree have the Croatian Indian carving on it? I think that the hostile tribe living near the lost colony of Roanoke attacked that people living there. Then, after that, the kept coming back to take the supplies that were remaining to use for their own good. That would explain why the houses and materials were gone. I think that the reasoning behind the carving saying Croatian is that the aggressive tribe tried to make it seem like the people of Roanoke went to live with them. So no one would suspect that they killed them, therefore, no one would go and attack their tribe. I do not think that the Queen requested John White to lie.

ReplyDeleteAfter learning about the lost colony of Roanoke, I don’t believe that John White covered up any information about the disappearance of his colony. After finding nothing at the site, he was grief stricken. I believe he would’ve done anything to find his daughter and granddaughter; his colony, too. I don’t believe he would be capable to lie after such a traumatic incident. However, if they did indeed cover it up, it would be considered a government conspiracy. The two powerful figures covered up an extremely important piece of information from the concerned world.

Roanoke is one of the mysteries we may not find truth about. But I do share opinion its unlikely John White covered up any information about his lost family and colony.
Delete-Katya's Mom
I do not think that John White or Queen Elizabeth covered up the truth. John White only wanted to finds his friends and family. If he knew what had happened he would have went to meet them or get revenge on who ever had killed them. He'd want the world to know the savage people that killed his family and baby granddaughter. I don't think Queen Elizabeth would have covered it up either. She would want to tell everyone what had happened so it could be prevented next time.

After learning about the lost colony of Roanoke I don't think that Queen Elizabeth or John White knew what happened to the lost colony. None of the theories said anything about John White or Queen Elizabeth. Also how would the grey-eyed Indians be part of the Croatians, which were back in the swamp area behind the lost colony.
ReplyDeleteJess M. Period 10/11 B
I do not think that The Queen knew or john white knew what happened to roanoke. Nothing said anything about them knowing what happened. And in all the stuff we read in class and what we got taught, nothing was brought up about either of them. And i also dont thing the Queen could cover up something like the colonie being missing. its kind of a big thing to go missing.
ReplyDeletesidne h 10/11
It is possible that Queen Elizabeth knew what happened to the colony of Roanoke. After all, they funded the voyage and they probably knew the dangers of going to Roanoke. I even think that they knew the colonist would probably disappear. THey probably thought that the Spanish would attack and the colonist had no chance. Queen Elizabeth sent them into a death trap.
ReplyDeleteI believe the people of Roanoke went with the Indians. I believe this because before John White left he said if you ever leave Roanoke write where you went or who you went with on the trees. When John White returned to Roanoke he saw writing on the trees. It was about the other Indians near by. When White went to the other Indians he saw some with blue and grey eyes which was a relief because he knew that many Indians naturally had brown eyes. So when he saw Indians with blue/grey eyes he knew that his family was here.

After learning the theories about the Roanoke, yes I think John white knew about the mystery but covered it up. No one else knew about it so they could have covered it up easily. He came back and nothing was there but he was the only one that would know the truth. Queen Elizabeth could have lied to make more people settle in the new world.
ReplyDeleteMatthew H Period 2-3A
Yes I definitely with this queen Elizabeth probably did tell John white to tell a lie because if the people of spain herd about this nobody would want to go on that land anymore and if nobody went on to Roanoke anymore than the English would come over and take it for themselves. If people heard it was a mystery nobody knows what happened to them they just disappeared people would be afraid of going there.Thats why the queen just told him not to say anything because if nobody went back English would take it over and they wanted more land because there might be gold on Roanoke.

ReplyDeleteAfter learning the theories about thee theories about the lost colony of Roanoke I believe that John White and Queen Elizabeth did not have a part in the disappearances. John White would not want to lie about his daughter and granddaughters disappearance. He would probably do has much has he can to find them. I believe that the Croatian tribe had killed or captured the people in the camp since the only clue that John White had was the Croatian had carved their tribe name in a tree right outside the camp! Therefore, I believe what happened was the Croatian tribe had captured and killed the villagers of Roanoke, and Queen Elizabeth, and John White had nothing to do with it!

I think the Roanoke culture was wiped out by a huge wave generated by a storm. They didn t find a lot of remains'because all the remains were washed away by the sea. That explains why they didnt find a lot of dead bodies. I think the king and queen covered up the remaining evidence so the settlers going to roanoke would not be scared. That is what I think happened to the Roanoke culture.

After learning about the lost colony of roanoke i believe john white and Queen elizabeth had known about the deaths but had not told england because if they did it would stop people from going to the new world and claiming land for england. if this wasnt done we might have not even be speaking english to this day

After learning about the lost colony of Roanoke I don't believe that John White or Queen Elizabeth knew anything about what happened to the settlers. The reason i say that is because everyone was wondering about it and if they did know anything about i think they would have told someone.

no i don't think that John and Queen Elisabeth had anything to do with it since John left and then when he came back everyone was gone. And the only clue he had was the tree that said Croatian on it. It would have been weird if they knew. They were on the other side of the world. There was no way. If anyone knew what happened to the settlers, the natives would have known.
ReplyDeleteJoey L.
I 100% agree that Queen Elizabeth told them John white to lie so it didn't like everyone had died. If everyone had really died and John White told England than no one would want to go to the New world and we could be speaking Spanish right now if John White didn't lie.
ReplyDeleteChase 1/2 B
There is no doubt in my mind that they knew about it. It would be there job to know. Of course they tried to cover it up because if news got out about Roanoke disappearing no one would go to America and that would mean some of England's profit just flew out the window.
ReplyDeleteI believe that they knew what had happened in Roanoke. They did not tell anyone because they did not want people to not come to America. Also if no one came to america they would have made no money. If the Queen or John White did not lie we could be speaking a totally different language. Although they did no about it I think it was a good decision to not tell.

I believe Queen Elizabeth and John White did not make up the story of "the lost colony,". I think people just want an answer to any mystery, so they will blame anyone. The Queen and John White couldn't have keep that big of an secret, anyway. They might of blamed the Croatons with the tree because the colony starved. This might of made the colony look a little better than it was.

My theory of what happened to roanoke was that John White lied about there being no one there.I think that he lied because why would there be no traces of anyone being there?Other theories say that the people could have been killed by a drought that lead to lack of food or even a storm, but if this did happen where would the people have gone, or there houses, or even anything!I think that John Smith lied and actually saw dead bodies and didn't tell the people because because if they knew that the people of that colony died they would not want to move to the new colony.
ReplyDeleteKate W Period 5-9 B
After learning about the disappearance of the Roanoke colony, I don’t think that Queen Elizabeth and John White knew about what had happened. I think this because if they did, why wouldn’t they tell people about it? Was it simply because that they thought that this would scare away new settlers? There was plenty of other land for others to settle, and if new settlers came, they could just steer clear of the Roanoke area. Also, if they were to cover it up, wouldn’t we be able to find just a little something after over 400 years? Was there no record of what John WHite saw? Wouldn’t we have found something to point us in the right direction if archaeologists having digging at the sight for so long? Finally, John White’s daughter and granddaughter were there, wouldn’t he wanted to find out what had happened to them if he hadn’t seen the bodies? Why would he just forget and leave his family there? All in all, I think that John White and Queen Elizabeth had no idea what had happened to the settlers at Roanoke, so they didn’t cover anything up. I think the colonists just disappeared, maybe going to a nearby Croatan colony, or maybe ransacked by natives, but I do not think John White or Queen Elizabeth knew anything about it.
ReplyDeleteSofia T, Period 1-2 B
I do not think Queen Elizabeth or John White knew what happened to the Colony. If they truly did no why would they keep it a mystery. And also, if he had people he cared about there he should want to know what happened to them. So I honestly dont think he knew what happened.

I think John White acted like he didn't know anything if he knew anything because if he said the people of Roanoke all died then no one would would go on the next ships to other places that Elizabeth funded. So this lie could have possibly saved all of the Americans in the United States. I do think this was a government conspiracy sort of like aliens. No one knows if they are real and no one knows what happened to the people of Roanoke.

John white could have gone to Roanoke but every dead. After he returned He told queen Elisabeth. She did not want anyone to know so she told john to tell everyone that everyone was gone so no one get scared that everyone died.John did as he was told and only they knew about it.this is why the the government could be like that everywhere.
ReplyDeleteMitchell Eastmond 1-2 B
The theory I believe was that John White just covered the story up. Everyone was expecting them to start a great colony. If it failed it would be a huge embarrassment. So i believe John White just made a cover up story.
ReplyDeleteAnthony C 5-9B
Of course Gov White lied in the official details of what he found when he returned to Roanoke. His word is all we have to go on which left everything a mystery about the fate of everyone he left there including his own family. He knew they were all dead. That's why he never seriously tried to find them inland or on the other island "Croaton." He sailed away never to return and basically disappeared from history after his one return voyage. You think he would have tried to find his loved ones until the day he died but no other English speaking settlers came for more than 20 years. Unless DNA testing ever proves a direct link between a known descendant of the Roanoke settlers and the native population it stands to reason everyone died and the mysterious disappearance story was made up to save face for White, who left everyone there, and to save face for the crown so future settlers wouldn't be looking back at two failed English settlements. The first one failed when everyone sailed back to England after 10 months of brutal hardship and attacks by natives. The second failed when everyone left behind from the 1587 colony certainly died before the Governor returned. Mystery solved.
