  1. I honestly thing that Christopher Columbus was the villain of the story because he asked the American Indians to find him at least a jar full of gold every day when there wasn't even gold around! And if they didn't bring back that jar full, he would either murder them or cut off their hands. When he left early America, he took some American Indians with him to sell into slavery. That right there alone wasn't right. He did so many terrible things to the American Indians, that I can't even explain them all. It's comprehensible. For instance, within three years of him visiting America, he had killed over 5 million people.

  2. I would call Columbus a villain because he and his men genocided, tortured, enslaved, and made taino Indian life a nightmare. He may have discovered America, but he also paved the way for others, including the British. If it wasn't for this horrible man, we could have had our natives, and our independence wouldn't be threatened, there might have been a better person to discover us for Europe then Columbus. The might have changed and people might still think the world is flat and not bother to discover us. Thus, preventing the deaths and diseases brought to our natives.

  3. Honestly I think that Columbus isn't a hero but he isn't a villain because he didn't know what was right. Today what Columbus did was a crime but back then they didn't know what was right and what was wrong. Sure, what Columbus did was wrong but we should blame the King and Queen. The King and Queen gave him permission to do what he did. They freed Columbus when he went back to Spain as a prisoner. They didn't care what Columbus did to get the gold. The King and Queen was in for the gold. So the people that are the villains are the King and Queen, the ones that just wanted the gold, the ones that didn't care what Columbus did to get the gold, the ones that freed him just so they could get more gold, the ones that gave him the men and supplies for his trips to get gold. It was the King and Queen that are the villains.

  4. In my opinion and with facts, I believe that Christopher Columbus was a villain, not a hero. One reason why I think that Columbus was a villain is because of how he took advantage of the Taino Indians. He made any of the Natives in the New World at the age of 14 or older to mine for gold for him. This took away their daily lives of hunting and helping their families, and eventually caused death by starvation. Another reason why Columbus is a villain is because of how he tortured the Tainos. He cut off their hands, nose, and ears. He also killed many, and some even led to suicide because they didn't want to have to dig for gold anymore. The population of the Tainos was all gone, and not one Native survived. He, along with his men, killed over 8 million of the Tainos. The last reason why Christopher Columbus was a villain is because of what he did with the gold. He made his men that worked for him think that they would get money and gold, and they would be able to help their families a lot with it. He actually took it all for himself and paid them minimum wage for killing the whole population of Tainos. Furthermore, Christopher discovering the New World can't make up for all of the horrible things that he did.

  6. In my opinion I think Christopher Columbus is a villain. One reason why I think Columbus is a villain is because of the torture he put against the poor poor Tainos. He tortured these poor innocent people by chopping off their hands or noses if they did not bring back enough gold for him. Another reason why I think Columbus is a villain because in most of the research I have done, I realized he is to blame for 8,000,000 people that are dead. No murderer should be a hero. He created a genocide that should have never been. Everyone says he is such a great man for finding america, however he is a killing villain. Not a lot of people know he killed that many people. He dose not deserve his own holiday! I truly think that Christopher Columbus is a very bad villain!!

  9. In my opinion Christopher Columbus is a villain. I believe this because Columbus was responsible for the genocide of the Tainos. Even though his men did all of the dirty work, he was the one who instructed them to do so. When he left Hispaniola, he told his men that they could do what they please with the Tainos. Before Columbus came to Hispaniola, the Taino population was over 3,000,000. After Columbus left, there were less than 200 Tainos.

  10. I believe that Christopher Columbus was a villain. I believe this because he killed 3,000,000 Tainos! He forced them to collect gold, and if they didn't find any, then he would torture them. The only time he showed some kindness was when he was collecting gold from them for his own benefit. I personally don't understand why he has his own holiday for "discovering" America which he didn't. Why would we all celebrate something not accurate? He was a mean, cold-blooded person and he does not deserve to have any recognition except for being a terrible person.

  11. I don't think Columbus was a hero because he caused a large genocide on the Tainos population. He used them as slaves, and he used them to find gold. If they didn't find gold he would send dogs after them, he would order his men to cut off their hands and noses, he brought plagues over from Europe and killed off the population.

  12. I believe that Columbus was a villain. I believe this because he was very cruel to everybody, and sometimes even his men. He chopped off the Taino Indians hands and noses. Why should he be a hero if he has done a thing like this? My other reason to support this is even though Columbus' men did all of the harm, Columbus told them what to do.

He took advantage of them and was cruel. Even if he discovered North America he killed what is known to be approximately 3,000,000 Native Americans. He created genocide that was without reason. The Tainos were so fed up with the lives Columbus created for them that most committed suicide. I truly think Columbus is a villain.

  16. Based on my knowledge of Christopher Columbus, I believe that he is a villain. He ordered his men to kill off and make the lives of millions of innocent people miserable. In the end, he is the main cause of genocide to the Indians on the islands he had discovered. Torture was brought by him (both indirectly and directly) to the Indians. Hands, noses and ears were cut off of the Indians all on Columbus's orders. He ordered kids as young as me to work in the harsh curtail conditions of the gold mines, and would be punished if never finding gold. In conclusion, Columbus is a very mean man who is anything but a hero.

  17. In my opinion Columbus was the villain of the story, and far from being a hero. Columbus gave orders to his men to make the Natives' lives miserable. He told his men to do whatever that they must to, just to find the gold. It is Columbus who lead the world's largest genocide. He ruined peoples lives and wiped out a whole population of Natives. He showed no mercy to anyone. Columbus was just a greedy man who couldn't be happy with what he had. His greed led him to terrible things and become a villain. Had he just found the land and kept the peace with the Natives he could have possibly been labeled a hero, but we all know that's not how it worked. He was pure evil and a villain.

  18. Christopher Columbus was a great wicked man. He found a entire continent without even knowing it. Yet we don't want to praise him as it wasn't his intentions. They just happened to find this massive land as they used common sense to find Asia. When they found the continent they saw natives. They had one reason to call them Indians they didn't know who they were! They bartered and traded with them for awhile then left. After awhile he came back and took slaves while some men left behind made settlements. Then he came back one last time and commanded the natives to do what they want. It was a horrible time. Columbus was evil. They should have made him the villain in history not the hero who found America.

So, Columbus set out all his men to cut off the Natives hands, noses, and toes if the Natives wouldn’t give them gold. Columbus’s men didn’t want to do this but, if they said anything They would be died and Columbus would kill them. Columbus treated everyone terrible when they choose not to listen. Columbus took Indian’s over for slavery. If Columbus didn’t find America Someone else would have found America. That person could have been nicer than Columbus. 30. Christopher Columbus is not a hero, instead, he's a villain. This is because he made an entire race of maybe > 3,000,000 taino indians come to genocide. Some evidence is that if he had not cut off their hands, noses, and other appendages, (which would lead to infection and ultimately death) they might have lived years or maybe even decades longer after that. 34. In class, I have learned that there are many different sides to Columbus. Columbus has more of a dark side to him than a good side. This is why he is a villain in history. He mistreated natives by abusing them, robbing from them, killing them, and being cruel when they treated him kindly at first. Based on the information I’ve learned in class, he made the natives bring him gold and cut of some of their body parts or killed them if they did not bring enough. He also took their gold and other riches from them. Finally, when the natives greeted Columbus with riches and compliments, Columbus greeted them with knives to the throat and threats. Columbus did not solve any problems in the world, he caused them.

If anything went wrong he had his men cut of the hands, noses, or toes, or he would have his dogs rip them to shreds. The Tianos did nothing to deserve such harm. Columbus kept going back and harming the Tianos. There were 300,000,000 and when he came year after year there were less and less until there were zero Tianos. Through this Columbus grow very greedy because he was finding gold. Don't you find it odd that there are only a little bit of Taino population now but before Columbus came there were over three million Taino. This means one thing and one thing only Columbus should have been charged of genocide of the Taino just like how Hitler was with the Jews it is clear that Columbus is clearly a villain. Then he gets a Holiday because he discovered the New World? They should take that holiday away because all we are doing is celebrating his work of genocide of all the Tainos. 50. In my opinion, Christopher Columbus is a villain. People say he did not know he was doing anything wrong, but he still should have came to his senses. For something this tragic, a person would not need someone to tell them that it is wrong. Christopher should have known this was not a good deed. I feel Christopher Columbus is also a villain because not only did he do something wrong, but he is a criminal, because if he was not, he wouldn't be sent to prison. For example, in the reading in my packet, it says after a new ruler came to rule, the new leader sent Christopher back to Spain to be a prisoner. In addition, Christopher did bad things. For example, he killed millions of Tainos, and caused pain against them, such as cutting of their ears or noses. Columbus also started war with the Tainos. Columbus even wanted the Tainos to be taken from their homes and brought back to Spain and be sold as slaves. If Columbus was a "hero" wouldn't he be at least a good leader, not one that kills his people? A hero is a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. This does not define Columbus. Columbus did many things, but good things are not one of them. I would not consider Columbus as a hero, but only a villain.

When Columbus reached America he did not show that he cared about the Native Tainos in any way. He enslaved them to mine gold and when they didn't bring him what he said they owed him, he ordered his men to slice their hands or noses off. Columbus allowed or even ordered his men to abuse, kill, and mistreat men, women, and children. The only thing that he ever cared about was gold and because of this he is responsible for the genocide of the Tainos. However, Christopher Columbus also changed something by reaching the Americas. He is the one who discovered these two continents and without him the “New World” would possibly still be unknown or tremendously different today.

However, he opened up a window of discovery for the common english men. He would also be considered a hero because he was headstrong and very determined to get sponsored so he could discover new land. On the other hand, he stole the land from the natives; he basically walked into their home and said it belonged to him. In conclusion, Columbus is portrayed as both a hero and as villain because he did good for some but also committed genocide.

  54. I believe that Christopher Columbus is a villain. The reason is that he killed more than 6 million Tainos Indians. He first enslaved them to find gold. If they did not do or attempt the order, they would be tortured or killed. How Columbus tortured them was that his crew members would cut off a body part such as, hand, finger, foot, limb, etc.. Christopher Columbus didn't kill the people himself, his crew members did because Christopher Columbus gave the order to enslave, torture, and kill the Tainos.

  60. I think Christoper Columbus is a villein. I think this because Columbus killed 3 million Indians on their own land. I think this is cruel and Columbus should of been punished for cutting Indians hands and noses off because they did't find gold for England. Also he brought children and woman back to England for slaves and as wife's. The ones that didn't want to leave were killed. Strongly I believe Christoper Columbus is a villein for killing many people.

  61. I think Christopher Columbus was a hero and a villain. Columbus did commit genocide against the Taino Indians and
enslave them. He did to many other terrible things to count. However when discussing this you have to keep in mind that most limey any other person would have done the same thing.

  62. k Christopher Columbus was a villain. I think this because if the Tainos didn't bring him back enough gold he ordered his men to chop of their hands, ears and noses. Columbus killed over 3 million Tainos and destroyed their civilization. The Tainos were very innocent and friendly. They didn't deserve to die just because they didn't bring back gold. Columbus was very cruel and should not be considered as a hero.

  63. I believe that Coulumbus was a bad guy. If you kill a whole race of people, I do not know how people think you are a good person. I think he was a bad guy for many reasons. He intend using slavery for America. He doomed us for a fate of owning slaves. Also he killed a whole race of people, and in my eyes he will never be forgiven. First of all he intended to land in India, but landed some where close to Cuda. So how does that make him discover of America, he didn't land in America, and claimed it when it was all ready inhabited. He was very cruel to the natives and that makes him a bad person in my eyes.
