The Crossing-7th Grade

Do you feel that George Washington made the right decision in crossing the Delaware River on Christmas night, 1776 and attacking the Hessians in what became known as the Battle of Trenton?  What might have happened if he had not succeeded in this attack?  Use details from the film, "The Crossing" to support your opinions! Yes, I think that George Washington's idea of crossing the Delaware River was a good idea, because we had planned ahead and we had everything ready. But the British and the Hessians didn't seem to be ready, since it was Christmas. And if we had not cross the Delaware River, then the Hessians and the British would of had there troops and armys ready to go. Plus we wouldn't of got across the river in time.

I sort of disagree, we did get across the river in time. If Washington had not crossed the river,he never would have done it. So to say that he would not have gotten across the river in time, does not make to much sense to me. And, if Washington hadn't crossed the Delaware, what do you mean they would have their troops ready to go? Yes, they would have their troops ready in the morning but i'm assuming so would Washington considering he had them ready at night as well.

Yes, I do feel that George Washington made the right desion crossing the Delawere River on Christmas Day, to atack the Hessians. If He did not sucecced with this Battle, the Hessians would have won, and George Washington probably would have never been the presidant. Also, I think that it would have taken longer, for there to be a Peace treaty.

That is sop true! Our country would not have trusted George Washington as much if he did not win this battle! i had not even thought about that! That was a good observation:)

  3. Heck yes General Washington made the right decision! Without that decision, some believe that we would be British-America today. Plus, we were seen as ragtag men. When the Hessians were partying, we sneaked an attack in. Duh, I have to say yes because I'd be living in a British colony.

That is true! If Washington had not decided to do it, we might be living in a British colony, instead of America! We would have a minarchy government instead of our president!

  5. Yes, I do think that George Washington made the right decision to cross the Deleware river in the middle of the night. This is because nobody on the British side of the war was expecting an attack on Christmas morning, but they were wrong obviously wrong because it happened, and that most likely turned the war to out advantage, and that probably won the war for the Americans.

  7. General Washington made the right decision in attacking the Hessian's at night. Since it was Christmas the Hessian's were drunk or already asleep making them vulnerable. If he did not attack at night Washington's army very well might have lost a great amount of men and changed the course of history.

  8. Yes I think it was a good idea for George Washington and his army to cross the river because the Hessian's were not ready for battle. No one would expect an attack after Christmas day. We were successful. But if we were not, we would probably lose the war. However, we did win the battle and the war.

  9. I think that it was a good idea to cross the Delaware. It was a major event in the Revolutionary war. It was the first victory for the Americans during the war.

I think Washington made the right decision. He knew the Hessians would be partying and he was right. I think if he had not succeeded he would have lost a lot of men. Also, the soldiers may not have won the Battle of Princeton. I think if the attack had not succeeded we would be under British rule today.

I think George Washington made right decision. He knew the Hessians would be partying and he was right. Crossing the Delaware was a major event in the Revolutionary war. I think if Washington had not succeeded he would have lost more men then British and British lost more men then Americans because of George Washington.

  12. Yes, i feel George Washington made a good decision about crossing the Delaware river on Christmas night because Washingtoon knew that all the british were sleeping because of their partying anf drinking from Christmas. So it was a sneak attack. If this attack did not succed, then well croossing the Delaware would have been just for nothing. We would have ended up loosing so many men. It would have been a tradjety.

I do feel as if George Washington made the right decision by crossing the Delaware on Christmas night I feel this way because he caught the Hessians at a time they were least expecting it. Also all of the opposing soldiers were drunk and exhausted from their previous activities the night prior to the guerilla attack. If they had not won this battle then we most likely would not have won the war or we would have taken much longer to win the war. To add to it, if the continental army did not receive that victory then many of the soldiers would have left when their time was over only days after this battle. I know this because in the movie many of the men were tired and could not wait until they could go home and leave this once failing army. However, when they won this battle they were happy to stay longer and be part of the winning side. In conclusion, I feel that the victory at this battle was mandatory to the success for the Americans at the end of the revolutionary war.:)

  14. Yes I do feel that George Washington made the right decision to cross the Delaware river at night. I think so because how else would the Continental army defeat the British and Hessian's. A sneak attack after Christmas day would be perfect. This became known as the battle of Trenton. We won with zero casualties. However, if we did not succeed, we would probably lose the entire war. So this is why I feel that George Washington made a good decision t6o cross the river.

  16. Yes, I thought it was a good idea for Washington and his troops to cross the Delaware river because if we hadn't had the idea to use guerilla fighting, we would had never won the fight. Many of the Hessian soldiers weren't even ready. (Hint why they call it a surprise attack) Washington made it a good idea to make the fight on Christmas morning because all the Hessians were probably drunk and hung-over after they partied all night.

  17. I thought Washington made the right choice to cross the Delaware on Christmas. This is because all the Germans were celebrating so it gave us the perfect chance to attack. In Trenton we captured many Hessains. Therefore George Washington made a good decision to attack.

  18. I feel that George Washington made a very good choice of crossing the Delaware on Christmas night, 1776. If the colonists had not succeded in that attack we may have not recieved the French's support in the war. We captured over 1,000 Hessians and had a great success.

  19. I think that it was very smart on George Washington's part to cross the Delaware River, and surprise attack the Hessians. If George Washington hadn't convinced his army to cross the Delaware River, we wouldn't have had the confidence to keep trying to win the war. After all, we had been losing a lot of battles before then. Since the Hessians had all been partying, it was the perfect opportunity to win a battle, because all of the Hessians were unprepared. The fact that they had finally won made the Continental Army regain confidence, and made them realize that they were talented enough to beat the most well trained army in the world. Where would we be if George Washington hadn't made the decision to cross the river? Additionally, what would have happened if the Continental army had not won the Battle of Trenton?

  21. Yes, I do think that Washington made the right decision to go. This is because it was definately a plan well thought out. He knew they were sleeping so it's worth a short, right? Also, we wouldn't have trusted him as a leader as much if we hadn't gone through with his plan and won the war. It's common sense that if someone or a group of people are out partying, gambling, and drinking all night they will be dead asleep! So why wouldn't you take a risk and go for it!

Yes i do think that it was a good idea to attack the british and cross the Deleware river because George Washington planned ahead and wanted to surprise attack the british. People like General Lee thought he was mad and even insane but he was the complete opposite and thought ahead of time and won the Battle Of Trenton

  23. Yes, I think it was the right decision to make the attack at the British and Hessians on Christmas. I think this was a good idea because the British and Hessians were not ready at all and did not expect it. I think it was actully very smart of them because all of there soilders were partying, gambling and drinking so there were not ready to fight back.

  24. It was definitely the right decision of George Washington to cross the Delaware River. Like many others said, the Hessians and John Burgoyne were not ready for this attack. They were partying, which was a HUGE mistake. They should have been training, keeping watch, and doing something USEFUL. Washington was the smarter man, he knew that Burgoyne was not going to be ready for battle that night, and even if two of his men froze to death, Washington knew what he was doing. As, mentioned, he knew they would be partying. If Washington had not done this, who knows what would have happened next! Would we be under British rule today? Would Washington ever have became president? Would the Hessians have killed Washington and his troops? Would we even have the world we have today?

  26. I think that George Washington did the right thing. The attack was very successful and raised the soldiers morale. If they hadn't succeded, they could've had many of their men killed or captured. Then, their army wouldn't have had enough soldiers to keep going. But, that is not what happened, and it was a victory for us! George Washington was willing to take the risk, that is one of the qualities that made him such a good leader.
