Risking Your Life For Your Country?

Answer one or both of the following questions:

1)  Declaration of Independence

The signers of the Declaration of Independence were committing TREASON when they signed this important document.  The punishment for treason was death.  Why do you think the delegates were willing to risk their lives to become an independent nation?  Would you have done the same thing?  Why or why not?

2)  Women in the Revolution

Why do you think so many women were willing to risk their lives fighting or helping in other risky ways during the war if they were not even given equal treatment in society?  Would you have risked your life to do this if you were a woman during the American Revolution?

  1. 1.I think the delegates were willing to risk there lives while writing the declaration because it was worth it getting a free independent nation. They weren't caught and killed and we ended up with great country because of it. I would have done the same thing if i was alive in 1776 to help out the revolution.

  2. The women wanted freedom although they weren't treated equal to the men. The freedom for your country was more important to them. If I were a woman during the Revolution, I would be a women who helped in the war. However, I wouldn't fight. This is because I wouldn't be able to provide for my family and I would be humiliated if someone was to find out my gender. In my opinion, the women who fought for our country were brave independent women.

  3. Women risked their lives for their country, where stakes were high and their lives were at cost. Why? I believe these honorable women risked their lives because they wanted to be a part of the founding of their country. They wanted change- women weren't weak, and they shouldn't be treated unfairly! Sadly, even though a few women were honored for their achievements, nothing changed. Women would still be segregated from men. Only later on would men realize what a mistake they had made.

  4. In my opinion, women were wanting to risk their lives fighting or helping in war because they wanted to show that woman could be as strong and brave as men in war.For example,Deboarh Sampson dressed up as soldier. She also took a tour to talk about the army life.Another example,Molly Pitcher,or Mary Hays, filled in for her husband's spot during war because he got injured.Women also probably wanted to be recognize during the American Revolution too.If a was a woman during this time,I would risk my life to defend my country.

  5. I think the people that sighed the decloration of independence had faith in the colonist to win the war against the british. In the end no people were killed because we defended the british and got our freedom.

  6. i wouldnt want to risk my life in the war. but a few of the wemon back then in revolutionary times wanted to which was brave of them. Because they could be like shot and die, or if not die then get hurt really badly. i think so many girls were willing to risk there life in war because maybe some of them were hopeing that if a man found out they were a wemon then it would change there thoughts on wemon in war. So they could see that wemon are also strong and as brave as the men are. So i guess some of them thought they would get equal treatment in society. sidne h period 10/11

  7. I think women risked their lives because show that not only men could fight and to show that women are not weak. Another reason would be to help fight for their country and freedom. Also i believe that women fought because some are loyal to their country and they want to help and fight and they took the guts to disgis them self as men just to go into war.

  8. I think that the women risked their lives by joining the soldiers in fighting because it was a lot better for them. Women had to stay home with their kids or basically be the soldiers' slaves. A lot of women probably thought that they would make a better use if they became a soldier. If I was a woman during the American Revolution I would join the military because I would be fighting for what I want, and I wouldn't be nothing more than just a slave to the men

  10. 1. I think the delegates risked their lives to become a independent nation because they knew they would defeat Britain in battle and they wanted to make a statement. Yes, if I were a delegate I would done the same thing. I would of done for the same reasons they did it.
    2. I think so many women were willing to risk their lives in war, to show their husbands and other men that they deserve rights. If I were a women during the Revolutionary War I would of probably disguised as a man and fought.

  11. So many women were willing to risk their lives by going to war because they wanted to make a point. Think about it, women weren’t being treated fairly from the men and they thought that joining the war would change that attitude. I think that after they found out women were becoming soldiers in the war, men treated them differently. I would not go and risk my life and go to war because war isn’t worth it. All I would do is shoot a gun and get hazardous smoke in my face. I would never go to war.

  12. I believe that all men and women of age should be allowed to join their country's or state province. Their are so many women who risked and sometimes lost their lies to the Revolutionary War. Some of the famous women who helped bring the fight to the British are "Molly Pitcher", Molly Pitcher is actually a nickname she got this nickname by bringing water to the patriots during battle. Molly Pitcher also helped reload a cannon when her husband passed out of heat exhaustion. Other famous names are Deborah Sampson,Deborah Read Franklin, George Washington wife, and Abigail Adams wife. These are they more well known names in Revolutionary War women. Some however were not discovered.

  14. The signers of the Declaration of Independence were committing treason when they signed it, and the punishment for treason was death. I believe that the delegates were willing to risk their lives to become an independent nation because they believed in their cause, and they would rather die than not be free. They also thought that the colonies would be better off without having Britain controlling them.

  15. I think the signers of the Declaration of Independence weren't afraid to sign the document because if they won the battle that would mean they would get their freedom. Also, I think they thought their freedom was more important than their lives. So if that was what it would take to get freedom, then, it was worth the risk.

    1. I agree Jillian! If I were living in the time period and I was an American colonist I would most definitely want freedom and independence! Signing the Declaration of Independence was a huge risk and a brave thing to do because the punishment for treason was very serious. I would have been willing to sign if I could have since it was for America's freedom.

  16. I think the woman risked their lives by going to war because they wanted to help their country win and become free. The woman wanted to be free just as much as the men did and wanted to fight for their country even though they were woman and no one else knew they were fighting. I also think that the woman wanted to prove that even if the y were female they could still fight and be as strong like any man who fought in the Revolutionary War. If I was a woman in the Revolution, I would fight in the war. I would do this because I would want to help fight for my country no matter if I was man or woman or black or white as long as you fight for what you believe in. I would also want to be remembered as a woman who did a brave act and helped make America free from England today.

    1. Ditto! I would probably do the same thing. I would fight for my country and do what i always believed. I want to be remembered as a woman who was brave enough to fight for the war. And the woman who stepped up for her beliefs.

  18. 1) If I was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, I would have not even thought twice about the risks. I would have signed the document and would have wanted freedom in my country. I think the delegates signed the Declaration of Independence because they had a hunger for freedom. Also, the delegates who signed probably had no idea what they were getting into. Maybe, the signers didn’t know that they were committing treason! If I was a delegate, you would have seen my signature on the Declaration of Independence.
    2) I think that during the Revolutionary War era the women were absolutely equal with men. All genders, skin tones and age didn’t matter, everyone was so brave. Although many women dressed up as a man, only a few were awarded for their bravery. I think so many women risked their life because they wanted to be a part of the revolution. Also, many woman’s husband’s were in the war and the women could either be “camp-followers” or actually be in the army! Even if the women were home, they were giving the responsibility of running the household, farm or store front. If I were a women during the Revolutionary War, you would see me stepping up to the plate and being the bravest I could be and risk my life!

  19. 1) If I signed the Declaration Of Independence, I believe I would have thought of the risks before I signed but, I would definitely have signed it. They signed the Declaration because they wanted freedom. They put their lives on the line for the freedom of others. They obviously knew that if they picked up that quill and put that ink on the paper with their name on it, they were committing treason, but it came to the point where they were so thirsty for freedom they didn't care anymore and must have thought that dying was the least of their problems. Those Delegates wanted the freedom so bad to the point that they would die for the freedom of their country.

  20. 1) I think the delegates were willing to risk their lives to become an independent nation because they knew that even though there would be consequences, once the Declaration was presented to the king and many people were beginning to know about it, it couldn’t just be put to the side. King George would have to do SOMETHING about it. If he didn’t, the Patriots would begin to protest. Eventually, he would have to do something about the document and possibly America would become an independent nation anyway. The delegates knew that by risking their lives, they could possibly save many others’ lives because by their actions, they would make the future for everyone else better. I probably would have done the same thing if it meant in the future all of the generations after me would be happy and free.
    2) I think so many women were willing to risk their lives by fighting or doing other risky things during the war even though they were not given equal treatment in society because they felt that if men were able to help make their country free and a better place for the American colonists, why shouldn't they be able to? I think women wanted to be able to feel that they could contribute as much to the freedom of the country as men. I probably woudn't have done this because I would have hads to pretended to be someone I am not like people such as Deborah Sampson and anne marie lane did. I wouldn't have wanted to contribute to the war if i had to be in disguise and then not get any credit for it. I am sure that there were many other ladies who have disguised themselves as men adn went into the war but they are not famous because they were not found out. If I was allowed to go into the war as a women, I would have probably done that.

  21. I think that women in the American Revolution were willing to risk their lives fighting and helping in other ways, because they felt just as strongly about gaining freedom as the men did. The women weren’t just ruled by England, they were also ruled by men. This gave the women another reason to fight in the American Revolution. If I was alive during the American Revolution, I don’t think that I would of had the bravery to fight in the war, but I would’ve tried to help out in another way.
