7th Grade- Early Colonies

If you had to have lived in one of the early English settlements, which one would you pick; Roanoke, Jamestown, Plymouth, or Massachusetts Bay?  Give at least three reasons from the text, articles, etc. to support your answer!  (Post using first name, last initial, and period ONLY!!)

  1. If I had the chance to go to an early English colony, I would go to Plymouth. Three reasons I would make this decision are, it was the most successful colony, it was a colony with little violence, and it was a place with a lot of resources. Some reasons why I wouldn't go to Jamestown are that they did not have a good relationship with the Indians, and the resources were not good. Finally, I would not go to Roanoke because everyone died. Therefore Plymouth would be the best place to go.

  2. If I had to live in any place I would live in Plymouth. I want to because it had a big town, it was very friendly with the Indians, and a peaceful place were men were allowed to do alot. So if I were to live here it would be really cool

  3. If I had a chance to go to an early English colony, I would pick Plymouth. I would choose Plymouth because it was the most successful colony. It had little violence and it had outstanding resources. I would pick Roanoke because everyone died. Also, at Jamestown they did not have a good relationship with the Indians. lastly, in Massachusetts Bay the Puritans had desenders and terrible punishments.

  5. If i had the chance to visit any English Colony, I would pick Plymouth. Some reasons why I would want to visit Plymouth is because it was the most successful colony out of all English colonies. Although it had some violence in the colony the resources were very good. Also the other colonies had many problems within them which isn't good. Also Plymouth was in a very good location.

  6. If I had to live in one of the early english colonies I would live in Plymoth. I wouldn't want to go to Roanoke because nobody knows want happened to the colonists. I wouldn't want to go to Jamestown because of the starving times where everyone died. So I believe that Plymouth would
    be my best choice.

  7. If I had to live in any of the English colonies listed, I would go to Plymouth. One reason I would go to Plymouth is because of the good resources they brought with them. Although they didn't choose the right time to go to the new colony and it was too late for crops, they did bring onions and skilled farmers to go along with them to survive the winter. Jamestown had brought upper class rich men who didn't know anything about farming. Another reason why I would go to Plymouth is because they kept peace with the Natives. They welcomed the Natives to join with them, and they were nice, kind, and generous. The Natives were hostile with Roanoke because they weren't as welcoming as Plymouth. The last reason why I would want to go to Plymouth is because out of all of the other colonies, Plymouth was the most successful. Plymouth was in a good location, whereas neither of the other colonies were. Plymouth was also the colony that survived the winter with the most people still alive. We don't know what happened to Roanoke, and I wouldn't want to go anywhere without knowing its background history. Jamestown also doesn't have farmers, so I wouldn't want to go to somewhere where I have a chance of not surviving. Overall, I think that Plymouth would be the best place to live because it is somewhere that I think I would enjoy living in.

  8. If I had to have lived in one of the early English settlements, I would choose to live in Jamestown. I have so many reasons why I would live in Jamestown, but one of my first reasons is that the town was very fair. In Jamestown they had a rule that John Smith made which stated that if you didn't work you didn't get food. This is fair because say you didn’t work at all and you were getting the same amount of food as someone who works. That would be totally unfair to the person who was working hard. I would also choice Jamestown because in the winter of 1609 and 1610 a tragic time happened. It was the “Starving time”. The starving time isn't good at all but something good did come out of it. In the same winter, new people came back with new and improved supplies and materials.

  9. If I had to live in one of the early English Settlements I would want to live in Massachusetts Bay for many reasons. First, they were friends with four tribes, The Wampanoag, Algonquin, Peqout, and Nipmuck Tribes, so they had many friends that they had right by there side if they needed help. Second, they brought men and women that were well educated and had fortune. Lastly, They didn't have many failures so that is really good. So I would definitely choose the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

  10. If I were to live in an early English settlement, I would live in Plymouth. The reason I would choose Plymouth is because the citizens there were hard working and were reasonable. The reason why I would not choose Roanoke is because they were starving and I would be scared to be the first English colony in the New World. I also would not choose Roanoke because the settlers did not make it. Secondly, Jamestown was starving because they would not work hard enough for food. The settlers there were not brave or strong enough to ask the natives face to face to trade. Because of this They did not have enough food and were forced to be cannibals. The Puritan’s in Massachusetts bay were too harsh for me to live with. I do not know if
I could ever adjust to those strict ways. In Salem they started the witch trials which show how much trouble they start and how harmful they are to innocent people. On the contrary, the pilgrims in Plymouth, we reasonable, hard working, and clever. Before the Pilgrims even got off the boat, they made a set of rules to live by. This helped lead to Plymouth’s success. Plymouth was by far the smartest, most hard working, and overall best early English settlement.

  12. If I were to go to a colony I would choose Plymouth. I would choose Plymouth because it had the most willingly hard-working settlers. It also had the best relationship with the local Indian tribe. They were the most fortunate colony to have the Indians help them survive through the spring after the dreadful winter. That is why I would go to Plymoth rather than any other colony,

  13. I would have chosen to be in the Roanoke colony because I find that one interesting because it disappeared. They could have lived or died! Many other colonies didn't have that good of a relationship with the Indians. Also the Massachusetts Bay was kind of dangerous, for the Witch Trials.
